Somewhat amazingly, despite years of critically acclaimed concerts all over the globe, there's been no studio album released by Evan Dando since his final outing with the Lemonheads on 1996's "Car Button Cloth". As such, it's hard to know where to start a review of "Baby I'm Bored". Should I try and speculate on why his output since 1996 has consisted of a simple live album ("Live at the Brattle Theatre") and its low-key bonus disc (the "Griffith Sunset" EP)...

Even when he was swanning Winona Ryder to movie premieres, Evan Dando remained a shaggy, mild-mannered folk-pop singer who loved drugs, not grooming. So it's no surprise that seven years after the Lemonheads' demise, Dando's first solo outing is shambling and confessional...

When I interviewed Evan Dando in 2003 he was keen to point out that the beer we were chugging down at 11am was of the alcohol-free variety. That he was also transforming the beer cans into dope bongs seemed of little consequence - here was a new, cleaner Evan, off the heavy drugs and booze since September 11, 2001. Dando had been due in court on September 12 that year, charged with opening a bale of hay on-stage and telling a cop to fuck off. "They said, 'Mr Dando...

Evan Dando may have slipped off many people's radar sometime after The Lemonheads' sloppy drug-damaged swansong Car Button Cloth (1996), but few of us really doubted that he'd be back for a second bite at the big rock candy eventually. After all, what else could Evan Dando really do? Can you really imagine the one-time indie heartthrob packing your groceries at Wal-Mart or flipping greasy burgers at your unfriendly neighbourhood Burger King...

You know the feeling you have after coming out of a week-long bout of the flu? You feel better than before you were sick. So imagine a full recovery after a drawn-out dance of death with drugs, alcohol and hedonism, comprising a long musical career and more than a casual flirtation with celebrity, culminating in an almost seven-year hiatus, and you might just get how Evan Dando is feeling these days...

Of course it's hard to write any review of Evan Dando'sdebutalbum without using phrases like 'return from the wilderness' or 'long-awaited comeback'. However recent interviews with Dando reveal a man hardly contrite about his lost weekend that lasted 5 years! It has to be argued that being lazily labelled as grunge's posterboy and hanging around with Courtney Love would send any man over the edge...

Evan Dando's latest, Baby I'm Bored, is an excellent EP. Unfortunately, it's actually an LP, comprised of several outstanding songs and a disappointing amount of lazily written filler. Many critics have likened the long-anticipated album to a Christ-like resurrection, but this hyperbole is probably due to a lowering of standards. In his tenure with/as Lemonheads, Dando demonstrated an impressive lyrical talent and good ear for sunny pop melodies...

Of all the twists and turns in the rock career path, the one signposted 'I've cleaned up' is probably the least loved. Journalists feign interest in the former addict's new ostrich milk and organic beansprout regime; record execs wonder where their cranky, multi-talented visionary has disappeared to; lifelong fans shrug and utter the immortal line: 'I always preferred the early stuff anyway'.
Yet the news that

What has the former Lemonheads leader been up to these past seven years? That's the question Evan Dando seems to ask himself on this solo debut. He drawls a litany of self-abuse ("You stayed awake for fourteen days") on the Hank Williams-tinged "Why Do You Do This to Yourself?" and chastises himself elsewhere by declaring, "Whatever part of you that's been calling the shots is fired...
