The gentle genius behind The Young Rascals faced uncertainty at the start of his solo career in the mid-70s. Felix Cavaliere was apparently surprised to learn that the A&R men wanted hits, not rock operas, and wound up at Bearsville making a pop album with Todd Rundgren producing. In theory, it was the perfect musical marriage, but Cavaliere felt Rundgren was distant from the project and the eponymous 1974 album was, apparently, cobbled together...

The reason the Time Peace best-of is the Rascals album to own is the reason this runs down a groove so pleasant you often forget it's there. It's on a par with The Island of Real, maybe. But not Search and Nearness.

Two years after the Rascals broke up, leader Felix Cavaliere launched his solo career with this self-titled debut. The good news was that it was a major effort: Cavaliere co-wrote all the songs, and the record was co-produced by Todd Rundgren. Cavaliere had an eclectic ability to mix rock with Latin and soul elements and to sing his songs in a compellingly soulful voice that could be stirring or smooth...

This second solo disc from the Rascals' Felix Cavaliere, 1975's Destiny, has that familiar voice wrapped up in jazz-tinged disco. It's a top-notch effort which is more musical than it was commercial and is a natural extension of Island of Real, the last Rascals album, featuring some of the players who performed on that 1972 finale. The title track has Cavaliere sounding a bit like Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane, and the song is first rate, despite its disco leanings...

Felix Cavaliere made his first album in 15 years under the auspices of co-producer Don Was and his new MCA-distributed Karambolage label. Was had resurrected the career of Bonnie Raitt and produced such '60s legends as Bob Dylan, so he must have seemed like the perfect vehicle to arrange the comeback of the former Rascals lead singer-songwriter/organist...

Felix Cavaliere's third solo album is a superb piece of soulful soft rock, the former Rascals singer ably supported by Luther Vandross, Randy Brecker, et al., with Cavaliere doubling as his own producer. The material -- which includes a lean, stripped-down recut version of "People Got to Be Free" -- is a great showcase for Cavaliere's range, while the arrangements and accompaniments make the pieces soar in his hands...
