Fitz & the Tantrums are an American soul group from Los Angeles, California. The group was founded by Michael Fitzpatrick, who had begun writing soul music for a solo project on an old church organ he had purchased. He added friend James King to the group as an arranger and soon after expanded the band to a seven-piece, including several horns. Fitz & The Tantrums Reviews

On the surface, L.A.-based band Fitz & the Tantrums looks like any other indie pop band that's trying to ride Maroon 5's coattails of success. There's this visual trademark they explore that feels like a great leap into the haute culture glory days of Chic, while adopting Justin Timberlake's über cool "Suit & Tie" decorum. The style fits the L.A. band perfectly, but it's the music that definitely steals the show...

It's perhaps expected that Fitz & the Tantrums would layer on the gloss for their second full-length. There's certainly precedent in all the other times similarly hard-working up-and-comers have found themselves garnering attention and able to spend decent money on recording for once. And there's nothing inherently wrong with a bit (or in the case of someone like Queen or Depeche Mode, a lot) of studio trickery, unless one holds to the absolutist purist notion that the only honest records are...

The power of Fitz and the Tantrums' electrified live gigs and a terrific single in "Money Grabber" finally pushed this hard working contemporary R&B outfit out of the frat party trenches into the mainstream and larger halls. As if to acknowledge that newfound popularity, every song on this long awaited follow-up to 2010s Pickin' Up the Pieces reaches for the back rows...

Elektra On their 2010 debut, Pickin' Up the Pieces, Los Angeles soul rock group Fitz and the Tantrums didn't quite match the massive dynamic buoyancy of their live performances. That's not so much a concern here on the band's second effort. More Than Just a Dream is a grandiose album--full of movement and energy--bolstered by lively production from Tony Hoffer...

On their debut album, 2010's Pickin' Up the Pieces, Fitz and the Tantrums were retro-soul revivalists with new-wave panache. It was an all-killer, hooks-galore smash, built on the band's roomy Wrecking Crew grooves and the sassy sexual tension of co-vocalists "Fitz" Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs. Their hi-fi sequel More than Just a Dream flips the script, drawing out their '80s synth fetish...

When Fitz And The Tantrums' Pickin' Up The Pieces hit in 2010, it rode the wave of retro-soul artists throwbacking to the classic sounds of Motown and Stax Records. The group's superb "MoneyGrabber" had the horns, the punchy bass, and the sweat of late-'60s soul down to a T. And while that's fun for a bit, how far could that go, really? Luckily for them, there are more decades of great sounds to choose from, and for this go-around, The Tantrums set their sights on the '80s and early '90s...

This six-piece Los Angeles pop-soul group, led by studio engineer-turned-singer-songwriter Michael Fitzpatrick, is all about irrepressible energy: hopped-up rhythms, shout-it-out choruses, hooted background vocals. On their 2010 debut, Pickin' Up the Pieces, FATT were soul revivalists, and though you can still hear plenty of Motown in the beat and the booming production, they've tossed in lots more: hip-hop, electro, jittery New Wave and even a dash of Mumford & Sons in their shouty choruses...

We have seen no shortage of retro-tinged outfits, trying to recapture that late 60s soul in recent years. What separates the genuine bands from the tribute acts are those that use the musical palette as inspiration and transcend it. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings have arguably pulled off the balance successfully as have Perth's Tame Impala with the garage rock aesthetic...

Michael Fitzpatrick and his band, which includes former members of and , are on a mission: to reclaim the original US R&B;, an American invention, remember, even if the dominance of UK soul girls ( , , et al) on both sides of the Atlantic over the past few years would suggest otherwise. Basically, if you're a Stax and Motown fetishist, you'll love what these revivalists are doing...
