Foreigner is a rock band formed in New York City in 1976 by veteran musicians Mick Jones and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald, along with then-unknown vocalist Lou Gramm (Louis Grammatico). The band is led by British journeyman rocker Mick Jones (former member of Nero and The Gladiators, Spooky Tooth... I Want To Know What Love Is - The Ballads The album features fourteen tracks from the band's extensive back catalogue, only that they are all sung by Kelly Hansen, who took over the vocals from Lou Gramm a decade ago. While he has a classic rock voice, Hansen doesn't have the same gravitas as Gramm, and reworkings of I Want To Know What Love Is and Waiting For A Girl Like You sound thin...

Just in time for Valentine's Day earMUSIC treats us to yet another compilation of Foreigner material. Titled after the band's most successful single "I Want To Know What Love Is" (#1 in 9 countries, among which Australia, Canada, the UK and the US), this sampler features a total of 14 ballads mainly written by main man and only original band member Mick Jones. All songs are performed by Kelly Hansen, who joined the band over ten years ago now...

In the years since Kelly Hansen took over lead vocals, stalwart Foreigner fans have come to embrace his take on the band's AOR classics as originally rendered by Lou Gramm. While there's the occasional sharp edge (Juke Box Hero), he's rightly won the masses over. With founder Mick Jones providing sterling guitar work and the occasional keyboard/vocal contribution (see Starrider), and Jason Bonham powering the whole, there's more than enough for fans in this 11-song set...

And the winner of 2012's Silliest Record Release is... Alive & Rockin' by Foreigner.Oh sure, this high-energy collection contains well-recorded live versions of nine of the band's mightiest fist-pumping epics ("Double Vision," "Cold As Ice," "Feels Like the First Time," "Urgent," etc.) but one glaring fact remains: it ain't Foreigner...

As is the wont of many bands to revisit their classics in acoustic guise in the live arena, sat atop bar stools, leading to the retreat of a good many punters to the bar, this 14-song re-tread may have a niche appeal. But for those who hanker for mellower moments, you can't argue with most of Mick Jones and co's reworking of standards such as the brushed Cold As Ice, tabla-laden Double Vision and flutey Starrider...

Wal-Mart exclusive releases are a funny thing: the concept alone is absurd. As successful as the nationwide mega-store is, releasing one's album solely through that outlet seems a strange way to sell a record. The album will no doubt sell; the store's low-price guarantee, after all, is just so darn hard to resist. Still, there are plenty of other stores that could sell the album just as well...

Has it really been 15 years since Foreigner recorded a studio album? It seems like we're constantly hearing them (the old songs still get considerable airplay) or seeing them (they're always on tour). In the interim, Foreigner has released what seem like 24 greatest hits albums (OK, maybe just a handful) and, besides, who needs a new record when you've got six multi-platinum albums? Mick Jones does...

Before there were American Apparel ads, there was Foreigner's best album cover: It showed a schoolgirl erasing graffiti in a men's john, and it replaced prior covers of the band's jowly faces. A mix of U.K. and U.S. also-rans, Foreigner embodied corporate rock?by comparison, REO Speedwagon were as flamboyant as Styx, and Styx were as colorful as Journey...

Few rock genres have been as formulaic, anodyne, and unhip as AOR, a late 70s acronym for Adult Oriented Rock or Album Oriented Rock. Among the juggernaut bands that drove its melodic lite-metal sound into the early 80s, Foreigner scored huge with Feels Like the First Time, Cold as Ice and other strained emotings. As with kindred spirits Boston, Journey and more, they delivered at least one redeeming beauty of a hit, the ardent, desperate Waiting for a Girl Like You...
