Where this generic R&B; crooner won over middle-school shorties with2003's breakup hit "Don't Wanna Try," the marginal growth of his sophomore album ? The One ? shows he's now shooting for 10th-graders. And writing like 'em,too. On "How to Deal," Frankie's blatant rip-off of Usher's "Burn," hereveals painfully shallow skills: "Ho's come along with luxury. . .this isthe life that I was given." Dude, you're 26. Get your songwriting GEDalready.

Too fresh-faced and sweet to give Usher a run for his money, this MTV-abetted soulster sounds like an American Idol winner without the adult-pop obligations. His second album is far too long on gentle, faceless crooning about the usual odds-beating hopefulness and an unnamed girl whose beauty makes him weep (rhymes with "can't sleep").

R&B; songster Frankie J has a voice that communicates anguish even in good times. It made "Don't Wanna Try" a hit and could do the same for "We Still" and "Be Home Soon," if
only each of these
pretty ballads weren't
so simple, and so alike.

I was really rooting for this former Kumbia King to knock it out of the park on this one. The One is not a bad little pop record, but I guess I was wrong about his originality and drive and desire. It turns out all he wants to be is the Hispanic Usher. Fortunately, I love Usher, and so does America.

What's a Man to Do? is an accomplished -- if everyday -- contemporary R&B; album from Frankie J, a singer who's still quite young but has plenty of experience in the music business. With a background in Latin freestyle and Latin pop, Frankie J has made a smooth, stylistic transition on this album, made evident by the Top 40 single "Don't Wanna Try," one of several ballads here (it's also a rather daring rip of Force M.D.'s' "Tender Love")...

"Don't Wanna Try," a single that wound up cracking the Top 20 in 2003, is probably responsible for allowing Frankie J to bring in the likes of songwriters/producers Bryan-Michael Cox and Mario Winans, along with features from Baby Bash and Swisha House heavyweight Paul Wall, for follow-up The One...
