Purchase at: Insound (Vinyl) | Amazon (MP3 & CD) | iTunes | MOG Tweet There's something to be said for the ability to write a really great guitar riff. It's become something of a lost art in recent years, with digital manipulation and studio polish taking the bite out of many guitar-based bands...

Nostalgia comes in all sorts of wonderfully specialized flavors these days. The meth-fueled sludge of Vincebus Eruptum-era Blue Cheer, for example, is reanimated in Fuzz, the perfectly named young California trio consisting of Roland Cosio (bass), Charlie Moothart (guitar), and prolific garage-psych wunderkind Ty Segall (drums, vocals)...

FUZZ - Fuzz Album: Fuzz Artist: FUZZ Label: In The Red Release Date: October 01, 2013 www.intheredrecords.com BY TIM HINELY I think in San Franciscan Ty Segall we have a musician here of Pollardian proportions, in other words, the dude's prolific...

You don't have to be Greil Marcus to recognize that Ty Segall is a Black Sabbath fan. While he hasn't been afraid to show his influences (and talk about his love for the band), his latest project Fuzz is his most Immoni/Ozzy indebted work yet. The eight song thunderbolt of a record screams 1969, from the album cover to righteous guitar riffs, and is one of the most instantly gratifying records I have heard in a while...

From the very beginning of Fuzz's self-titled masterpiece I knew I was about to be transported somewhere sinister and sensual. It had the feeling of one of those dark/bluesy/soulful pockets that would turn Guns N Roses songs from really good hard rock songs to portals to the center of all creation. All sorts of moody and so ice cold it was warm. Then these fuckers immediately switched it up - dropped some heavy blotter acid and got all Manson family killing spree with it...

He may play garage rock like a total slacker, but Ty Segall is not a man who waits around on the sidelines to release an album. The San Franciscan has already put out a solo record this year ('Sleeper') and now he returns as the drummer/vocalist in new band Fuzz, with guitarist Charlie Moothart (an old schoolfriend and regular collaborator) and bassist Roland Cosio...

Tweet As The Name Implies... You should never expect accuracy from band names. The Gorillaz are not gorillas, Joy Division was less than joyful and the Barenaked Ladies are much less exciting than they should be. That said, books can occasionally be read by their covers. Not what you'd guess from a band called Fuzz, but they actually hit pretty close to the mark on this one...

Here's a toast to Tony McPhee. It seems like "Raise" on FUZZ's self-titled debut could be an unabashed tribute to McPhee's group The Groundhogs, one of those old-guy bands that some fangeezer will insist you give a chance--listen to them if you haven't already; they're right. Or listen to Ty Segall here--he of the almost-inhuman productivity stats, cranking out yet another project/album...

It's been a strange year for Ty Segall. The glut of releases is nothing new, but what that material comprised marked a few changes in the Segall's musical world. First, there was a mining of the past in reissues of both a record by his old band, the Traditional Fools, and a originally tour-only collaboration with Mikal Cronin. Though interesting, they seemed like stop-gap stuff to fill an unusually long gap in new output from Segall. Little did we know, he was just reloading...
