Graveyard Reviews

I have an extremely divided opinion of Lights Out and of Graveyard in general. On one hand, it raises questions: Where does pastiche take creative form, and when does it water down aesthetics of the represented genre (in this case, a sort of doom-metal subversion)? Where does the expression of influences lose the ability to translate, and where does rehashing begin? On the other, I catch myself unknowingly enjoying Lights Out whenever I quit trying to overtly "listen" to it...

Summary: The lights are out, the road goes on. 3 of 3 thought this review was well written Graveyard have really gone places during the last eighteen (or so) months. Their awesome second album Hinsigen Blues, got them on the road for nearly 160+ shows, they signed a record deal with one of the most important labels out there for rock/metal music (Nuclear Blast), and finally they were awarded with a Swedish Grammy award...

Sweden has a rich history of metal bands, to the point where it (along with its neighbor Finland) ranks as the world's highest in terms of metal bands per capita, but I can't think of any who had the very august and blue-blood Wall Street Journal act as a conduit for the world premiere of a song from their newest record, Lights Out...

Graveyard - Lights OutRecord Label: Nuclear Blast Release Date Nov. 6, 2012 (North America); Oct. 26, 2012 (Europe) Graveyard is a scraggly-haired quartet from Gothenburg, Sweden who play a dash of 70s-inspired hard rock that segues somewhere between Black Sabbath and The Sword. As one might expect there's a dose of killer riffs, but the band has far more than just guitar greatness in their repertoire...

Before there was metal, there was the blues. Metal's original trinity-- Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple-- all started in Britain's blues scene, and those roots are still discernible on their early records. Even into the 1980s, there were traces of the good-time boogie music of Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo in hair metal, while darker strains of Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker lurked inside Glenn Danzig's outsized persona...

Sound: April 19, 2011, saw the release of Graveyard's second album, "Hisingen Blues". Well, I think we can all agree this was one of the best releases of this year (if not the best), and one of the best albums to be released since 2000. In this one, the blues roots of the band appeared more than in the first record, "Graveyard", from 2007, and made a nice mix with psychedelia...

The inevitable slump following the atomic "Submarine Blues" of this Gothenburg, Sweden, quartet's self-titled 2007 debut nevertheless bottles a lightning shot or four of moonshine psych-blues. Analog-armored rifle shots in the crack title track, as well as 1960s rave-up "Ungrateful Are the Dead," jacket another lysergic nod in mood alternator "Uncomfortably Numb."

For a lot of young Swedes, it's apparently still 1973... what with bellbottomed bands like Witchcraft, Horisont, Noctum, Dead Man, and Graveyard, eh? Here's the latest from the latter, their second full-length, and yeah as the title suggests - and as everyone who heard their self-titled, stonery debut would expect - it's heavy '70 style blues rock, all right, rollin' and tumblin' with amped up urgency and authentic analog-recorded old school mojo...

Despite hailing from the melodic death metal capital of the world, Gothenburg four piece Graveyard's sound is far from the extremities of their countrymen, with a tag of 'Sweden's answer to Clutch' a pretty decent association, as the quartet's love of the rock music from the past is firmly sewn onto their collective sleeve. If you're looking for a fresh take on heavy music, than you're not going to find it with the Swede's second full length record, "Hisingen Blues"...
