Gregg Allman Reviews

Unlike the voices of so many alternative rock and country radio stars who sound so much alike, Gregg Allman's voice has always been instantly recognizable. Allman is on a list with singers from Johnny Mathis to Bob Dylan to Tony Bennett to Willie Nelson whose work is legendary because there is no mistaking whose voice is coming through the speakers. And these guys are legendary for another reason; they're all still alive. Which Allman probably shouldn't be...

Allman was at one of the high points in his roller-coaster of a career when this show was filmed in 1988; he was addiction-free, unshackled from his ill-advised marriage to Cher and enjoying the success of 1986's I'm No Angel album and its identically-named hit single...

The singing (as opposed to guitar-playing) Allman brother is currently enjoying a new lease of life following a liver transplant and the publication of his autobiography. This barely hour-long live show, however, dates from 1988, one year after his solo hit I'm No Angel and a year before the Allmans reunited. Predictably, Allman Brothers' numbers Statesboro Blues and One Way Out come over best when performed by the six-piece line-up...

Soulful and earthy in a way few are, scraped and shaped by hard luck, bad love, and the devil's music, Gregg Allman's voice has carried him through decades of solo recordings and all incarnations of the mighty Allman Brothers Band. On Low Country Blues, it's rightly his instrument of choice, a weapon of mass seduction...

Can somebody please tell me why the blues has never been considered a popular music genre? In fact, while you are it, can you also let me know why it has taken Greg Allman 14 years to release a new album? Actually, don't put yourself out ? it doesn't matter, for Mr Allman has just released an outstanding homage to the blues genre that surely ranks as the greatest record of his solo career...

The good news is that Gregg Allman is alive, well and recovering from a liver transplant. Less welcome news is that he's gone down the well-worn route of a blues covers album - and compared with, say, Paul Rodgers' Muddy Water Blues, it's a drab, downbeat affair. Low Country Blues was recorded before Allman's op and features Doyle Bramhall II on guitar and Dr John on keyboards, while roots superproducer T-Bone Burnett (Plant & Krauss, etc) is on hand to bestow further credibility...

With the new century the blue-eyed boys of the 60s blues revival have been turning into old bluesmen themselves, and the memorialising of their heroes seems to be a later-life rite of passage. Gregg Allman's history lesson may not match his finest recordings, but it's a diverting blues miscellany from an undoubted master...
