Grieves Reviews

It's hard for me to discuss Grieves without also bringing up Macklemore. Yes, they're both white rappers from Seattle, who have pretty similar voices and deliveries. But the main reason I associate the two is because I was introduced to them at the same time ? on a CunninLynguists song that featured them and Geo (from Blue Scholars) back in 2009. Since then I've compared their career trajectories and have flip-flopped countless times when deciding whose music I like more...

All Reviews Grieves - Winter & The Wolves March 26, 2014 by Robert Ham Released:March 25, 2014 - Rhymesayers AP Rating: With the Seattle hip-hop scene being laid upon the blogosphere's examination table thanks to the Grammy-winning domination of Macklemore, there's going to be at least a dozen rappers turned over for inspection. Although he's released four albums' worth of material now, Grieves is going to be one such piece of meat on the slab...

With a revamped production formula, Grieves is still making catchy, accessible music, but "Winter & The Wolves" rarely pushes any buttons lyrically. Grieves is still on a several-year upswing; his Rhymesayers' debut in 2011 caused enough of a splash to make Winter & The Wolves awaited by more fans than he's ever had. Since Together Apart, Grieves and producer Budo have separated, and the rapper has picked up with San Jose, California native B. Lewis...

Ire for the Seattle rapper Macklemore has obscured the thrift shopper's pedigree. Before Macklemore was the poster boy for mainstream rap's identity crisis, he was just another inoffensive, independent rapper, with a facile flow, a pleasant attitude and a real love for the genre of music he had chosen to work within...

Rhymesayers have always struck me as a label that could market an artist towards the current trend in hip hop. The last few years have introduced the public to Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi, Gym Class Heroes, Asher Roth, Tinie Tempah and Macklemore, all MCs that transcend the guns and bitches stereotype rappers are often slung with, in favour of a friendly, almost geek-like appearance...

Together/Apart is a manifestation of Rhymesayers Entertainment's marketing department and their seemingly neverending quest to homogenize hip-hop. Their understanding of the 20-something white male psyche is unrivaled in this industry. It is unfortunate; Grieves has the makings of a multi-dimensional vocalist with a pleasant voice and something of substance to say with it. There aren't technically complex multi-syllabics to be had here, just pure introspection...

If you start out for a destination and enjoy the journey, it's probably a sign you need to continue to explore. This is my weird allegory for the fact that you should never stop trying to discover new artists (in rap, particularly, in this case). If the most famous dudes on an underground label tickle your fancy, you should dig in the crates a little more and see if the lesser-known artists are as good. Talent usually attracts more talent...
