GWAR Concert Tickets

GWAR is a satirical thrash metal/punk band formed in 1985-1986 by a group of artists and musicians at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. The band is perhaps best known for their elaborate sci-fi/horror film inspired costumes, raunchy lyrics, and graphic stage performances, which can consist of scatology, sadomasochism, necrophilia, paedo-necrophilia, beastio-necrophilia, fire dancing, fake pagan rituals, mock executions/mutilations, and other controversial violent and political themes. GWAR Reviews

GWAR is a band that has been through a lot as of late. With the recent loss of their guitarist Flattus Maximus, or Corey Smoot, whichever you prefer, one would think they wouldn't quite recover. Most bands don't. Good thing GWAR aren't most bands. In fact, their latest release, Battle Maximus, is probably their best album. It packs the band's blistering sense of humor and unique punk-metal fusion into a package that manages to be just as fun and excessive as their obscene stage presence...

Battle Maximus follows a major loss by GWAR, but ends up being a major victory for the band. Following 2010's Bloody Pit of Horror, guitarist Flattus Maximus fled the band and took to the stars. Meanwhile, newest slave Cory Smoot, who is credited with energizing the band via 2004's War Party following a creative slump, suddenly passed away due to a genetic heart defect...

Like the inevitability of death itself we find ourselves once again in the grim position of receiving another GWAR album from the claws, tentacles, or possibly directly from the genitals, of the Scumdogs of the Universe. GWAR's hatred and contempt for the human race is well documented. Since their tragic awakening from their Antarctic slumber lo these many years ago, GWAR have taken it upon themselves to brutalize, rape, and humiliate every wretched homosapien unfortunate enough to come into...

It's an odd thing to objectively rate a Gwar album. If you're a fan, this one is probably a nine. If you're a casual listener, it's a seven, although with the usual caveats in place: you've got to be in the mood for some humour and you need to be able to deal with outrageous vocals and choruses, etc. Pound for pound, it's a heavier, more metal album than some of their releases (listen to "Nothing Left Alive" before the vocals kick in -- pure Lamb of God)...

How foolish was I to think that a little thing like death would slow down the inter-stellar marauders GWAR? Just over a year ago, GWAR suffered a dual tragedy when their guitarist, Flattus Maximus, stole their ship and returned to the stars while favored slave Cory Smoot tragically passed away from a genetic heart defect...

With the realisation that GWAR would be incorporating 8-string guitars on this release, I expected greater technicality to the band's music. Although it isn't played at breakneck thrash speed, Bloody Pit of Horror is perhaps not as technical as one might expect, but there's still enough sweep-picking to satisfy the virtuosos out there...

"'Bloody Pit of Horror' sees the band returning to its truly pissed off and violent state of mind, dishing out pain and carnage at every turn." The legend of GWAR is one that has been developing for decades in the underground. While GWAR's back-story alone could be the basis for a multi-part novel, the band is famous for its devastating, bloody live show and its controversial antics...

If you like your metal with myth, masks and mayhem then you would probably pick up this album. However, if like me, you're into the music and not grown men dressed as Satan's little helpers you might be put off by GWAR's bloodthirsty image. Famed for their gruesome live shows that feature fake pagan rituals, GWAR consists of: Oderus Urungus (vocals), Balsac the Jaws of Death (guitar), Flattus Maximus (guitar), Beefcake the Mighty (Bass), and Jizmak the Gusher (drums)...
