For those familiar with the past output of hardcore legends Hatebreed, the band's founder, vocalist and lyricist, Jamey Jasta, is like having a personal trainer in your life--you don't actually want him spitting motivational diatribes in your ear-hole as you sweat profusely, but your sure as hell feel the benefit afterwards. Hatebreed are a hardcore institution, and comparisons to drill sergeants, stern leaders etc. have all been leveled at the feet of Jasta since the band's formation in 1994...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare The Bitter Truth Because of its inherent simplicity, hardcore is a genre that can be done into the ground if bands are not careful. Hatebreed's newest release, The Divinity of Purpose, is an example of just what happens when a band has been around too long, has released the same material too many times, and has lost sight of what its listeners may be looking for...

Sound: If albums were judged by the emotion injected into them, Hatebreed would likely have record of the year. The metalcore band's latest release Supremacy is an intense and unrelenting example of the band at it's most honest. In the album's liner notes, vocalist Jamey Jasta explains that Supremacy was the product of one of the worst periods of his life, and that angst comes out vividly...

Sound: Hatebreed is an acquired taste. When I first put in this album, it was brutal. I liked the sound from the beginning. This was the first Hatebreed album I ever got (now I have them all). This album has it all it has songs with more melodic sounds, like "Live for This," and it has the songs that are just pure destruction, like "Doomsayer" or "Voice Of Contention." The overall sound of the album is great. Excellent guitars, bass, and drums. Jasta's voice was perfect for this type of music...

I come to this album a Hatebreed virgin, and I must say, rarely has there been a more aptly named band. "Happybreed" this ain't! Like a particularly pissed-off hybrid of Fear Factory, Machine Head, Slipknot, Pantera and maybe just a modicum of Metallica (especially in the impressively melodic, though mercifully infrequent, guitar solos), this is my idea of good, clean FUN...

"The reaction from the crowd is fantastic, and one that every band hopes to achieve." Hatebreed is a band which seems to get a lot more criticism than it deserves. Despite being a band with heavy ties to both hardcore and extreme metal, many are intent on not giving them a chance. Those people should take a look at the band's first DVD release, "Live Domination," which is without a doubt the most impressive DVD I've watched since Onslaught released their "Live Polish Assault" disc...

Rest assured that despite some personnel changes, Hatebreed still sound like Hatebreed. No more, no less. On their eponymous fifth release (sixth if you count covers album For the Lions), Connecticut's finest mix it up, slightly, as their signature metalcore sound occasionally ventures southward into death metal...

Seven years in and Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta is being heralded as the man who will change the face of heavy music. Based on the 16 blasts on Perseverance (the band's sophomore effort), that prediction is sounding less and less like something Miss Cleo might have said. Tearing away from their hardcore roots - usually a dangerous move - Hatebreed provide the kind of mind's eye violence that makes Slayer's Reign In Blood so relevant...
