"There's a lot to love about Havok's latest old-school thrasher, 'Unnatural Selection,' even if it does have a bit of a been there, done that feel at times." There's a lot to love about Havok's latest old-school thrasher, "Unnatural Selection," even if it does have a bit of a "been there, done that" feel at times. Then again, an album like this might be best measured by the soreness in your neck rather than its level of originality. There's nothing to complain about chops-wise...

Here, way above-average (don't-call-them-retro) thrashers Havok toss off a stopgap EP to keep the thrashing heads thrashing, with two new songs and two covers. And while I called a ban on Slayer covers a while back, not listening to any for the past few years has helped make this version of "Postmortem/Raining Blood" quite enjoyable. Havok's take on Sepultura's mighty "Arise" proves two things: it's an amazing, timeless metal classic and we all need to listen to the original more often...

"Havok's new EP, 'The Point Of No Return' is a 50/50 proposition -- it's 50 percent excellent original tunes and 50 percent heartfelt covers." Havok's new EP, "The Point Of No Return" is a 50/50 proposition -- it's 50 percent excellent original tunes and 50 percent heartfelt covers. That's a pretty decent equation, though it must be said that the two original tunes have a spark to them that the covers -- as good as they are -- just can't match...

"Old-school thrash fans are going to be wreaking Havok's 'Time Is Up' on their neighbors with the windows rolled down and the volume cranked up to 11. " With "Time Is Up," Denver-based Havok turns time back to around 1989 to serve up a solid slab of old-school thrash that blends the speed and rhythmic sensibilities of Anthrax with the virtuosity of Megadeth and the take-no-prisoners vocals of early Slayer...

Four albums into their career, Denver, CO's most recognized thrash act have their sound and style down to a science: rage away for a couple of minutes, pare everything back for a pummelling bridge, incite some fist-pumping via a rousing chorus then steamroll through a blazing guitar solo. While that's not a bad thrash cocktail, it's still little more than adhering to the genre's traditional aspects...

Here we are at the beginning of a brave new year and thrash metal is still shining bright. The genre is in renaissance mode right now thanks to a never ending slew of fresh underground releases from upstart bands of young dudes who weren't even born when the genre masterpieces were released. Havok are no exception and judging by the promo pics courtesy of their label, the quartet hasn't grown ample chest hair yet...

"If a straightforward blast of old-school thrash is what the doctor ordered, 'Burn' will fill the prescription." For the past several years, there has been an influx of young bands looking to bring the spirit of 80s thrash back to life. Some bands are taking the task seriously (E.g., Evile and Warbringer), while others are going for a goofy, fun and punk-ish sound (E.g., Gama Bomb and Municipal Waste)...
