He Is Legend Reviews

With 2009's It Hates You, Wilmington, NC rockers He Is Legend streamlined their approach, throwing hooks on top of hooks and delivering an immediately catchy, surprisingly poppy hard rock record a million miles removed from the metalcore chugs of their early work. Half a decade on and the group are back with an even bigger left turn. Following a brief hiatus, He Is Legend 2014 have returned with Heavy Fruit...

He Is Legend is quite the peculiar band. From live shows chock full of strange dancing and Metallica covers, to shortly running a string of tee shirts featuring upside down crosses and naked women getting their throats slit, normal has rarely been an apt adjective for the band. Even stranger yet is the progression the band has taken over its career, beginning as one of the premiere post-hardcore bands in the mid 2000's before putting forth a divisive southern drenched rock and roll record, then...

Brandon Geist | Aug 15, 2014 | Comments 0 | Tags: He Is Legend After a five-year hiatus from songwriting, North Carolina sludge-rock quintet He Is Legend craft an unusually satisfying blend of styles on their fourth album, building on their previous records. "No Visitors" starts the album off with a bang, with powerful melodic choruses spliced between groovy southern riffs...

First, there was the return from the full-stop hiatus. Now, with Heavy Fruit, comes He Is Legend's return from their studio hiatus, as it were. The Wilmington, North Carolina, outfit have been kicking tires around small pockets of the touring circuit since coming back from a self-imposed two-year break in 2009...

Call me a curmudgeon, scrooge, or even a fascist, but there aren't a lot of albums out there I truly consider "fun." Or at least not in a way that doesn't force the critic in me to step aside for a moment. It's just not the way I generally approach music. That critic in me, full of unforgiving standards and cold, calculated scrutiny takes over when I press play, and he doesn't easily drop the iron facade. Yet that's not to say I don't enjoy music; I wouldn't write about it if I didn't...

Sound: The album starts off with the track "Dixie Wolf (The Seduction Of...)", a sequel of sorts to "The Seduction" off of their previous album I am Hollywood. The track boasts the hammer and pull off sequence on guitars which He Is Legend are famous for. "Attack Of The Dungeon Witch" blends the newly acquired intense southern rock feel with the melody of their previous works to make one beautiful song...

Sound: He Is Legend - I am Hollywood is one of those albums you can just listen to over and over again without getting sick of it. It maintains a constant string of not very complex yet great sounding lead breaks right throught most of the songs, the bass I found is quite unnoticable exept for the awum riff in 'The Creature Walks' but I suppose thats just 'cause I'm a guitarist and I noticed that the drums were pretty fast and had a great rythm to it...

Sound: After reading a few of the other reviews so far I felt compelled to write this, my first ever review on this site. The sound is different. This is a fundamental and undeniable truth. If you've listened to I Am Hollywood or Suck Out the Poison and literally said, "This is the best album mere human beings can produce, there is no way anyone can top this in any shape or form" then you're going to be disappointed...

Artist: He Is Legend Album: Suck Out the Poison Label: Solid State Records Release Date: October 3, 2006 Review by: Eric Pettersson After a successful EP on Tribunal Records, Solid State Records felt compelled to respond to the buzz around He Is Legend. Their fall 2004 debut, I Am Hollywood, was a great stretch for the band, giving them what vocalist Schuylar Croom called a very "sassy" sound...
