Helstar Reviews

This year is another milestone for the legendary Texas metal band Helstar. Thirty years ago they released their first album, Burning Star. To celebrate, on the tour in support of This Wicked Nest, their eighth studio album, Helstar will perform songs from that classic album. Helstar: in the flames of Hel. As for This Wicked Nest, it's basically The Glory of Chaos Part 2. That album was heavy and basically raging from start to finish. Ditto for this one...

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Helstar. Celebrating 30 years of American power metal, the band has always been one of the most underrated in the genre. But they've always offered solid material with strong performances led by vocalist James Rivera. Needless to say, 30 Years of Hel is a collection for the fans. Helstar: tough enough. The DVD and two CD package offers a live recording in their hometown of Houston, Texas, and pretty darn good...

"Add all those things up and there are zero surprises and no points of interest - 'Glory of Chaos' is more straightforward that a drunk fratboy and flatter than the girl he's hitting on..." Helstar is another reformed thrash band from yesteryear. Broken up for long stretches over the 15 years from the early-1990s through the mid-2000s, the band reformed to take another stab at glory just a few years ago...

"These guys aren't revivalists, they're the real thing. But that doesn't mean they are an automatic success." The metal revival is going so well that it's time to cash in. Old school traditionalists Helstar made most of their headway during the 1980s, and Metal Blade has conveniently re-mastered and reissued their best two long-players as a set called "Rising From The Grave." Full length "A Distant Thunder" was released in 1988 and "Nosferatu" in 1989...

Heavy and relentless. True heavy metal. Texas metal. Words and description for metal legends Helstar and also their current release Glory of Chaos. Helstar's legacy peaked with 1989's Nosferatu, only to be quickly torpedoed by 1995's Multiples of Black. But they're on a roll now thanks to the brilliance of 2008's The King of Hell. James Rivera and company bring back the best of heavy and technical speed metal, badass stuff from the Lonestar state Texas...

It seems like every time you turn around these days there is a new release by another reunited 70's or 80's band. There have been quite a few said CD's out this year, but none that I was looking forward to more than Helstar's 'The King Of Hell.' Although never gaining the popularity that they perhaps deserved, the Texas speed metal legends emerged in the mid-80's with a string of above-average albums culminating with what many fans consider to be their masterpiece, 1989's 'Nosferatu...
