Iggy Azalea, The New Classic
Thank God none of us were tasked with determining the success of Iggy Azalea's major label debut The New Classic based entirely upon pre-album single "Fancy." Because had that been the case, odds are uncharacteristically high that it would have qualified as one of the biggest successes of the year...

White. Female. Australian. There's an awful lot about Iggy Azalea that marks her out as not your usual hip-hop star. Perhaps it's because of this outsider status that 'The New Classic' is so outwardly confrontational; Azalea spits furiously about how she's earned her success and how she's as deserving as they come. Her Miami-via-Mullumbimby, Australia drawl can take some getting used to, but she uses her acid tongue to flay anyone who dares to cross her...

Remember Gucci Gucci? Kreayshawn? Something About Kreay? I thought not. She wasn't even a flash in the pan. I didn't pay attention to anything she released and it wasn't because she wasn't a black rapper. It was because she was little more than a gimmick. I couldn't take her seriously, and clearly nobody else did. Her label only paid her one cent (I doubt they earned anything from her only major label album), the critics were particularly harsh, and nobody bought it. Well, someone bought it...

Iggy Azalea has been working on and touting her debut record for over two years. With that much time, she could have cooked up something less generic and a bit more memorable. The directionless album may have a number of songs that will make radio programmers drool, but the staying power resembles anything but a classic. (www.iggyazalea.com)

If you're already a fan of Iggy Azalea you would have felt the pain of waiting this long for her first album; sure there were mixtapes to tide us over, but a curated selection of what she thinks best represents her as an artist was always going to be far superior. I can confidently state that it has all been worth the wait. The New Classic is a mix of all things Iggy: rap, pop and a dirty attitude - and then some...

Hip-hop is obsessed with the idea of releasing a classic. Not that it doesn't happen in other genres, but in the rap world there's this obsession with it that's hard to find elsewhere. Fans are always quick to claim something is a classic when it drops, and likewise detractors are always ready to refute those claims. There's also the discussions revolving around albums that are already considered classics, whether or not they deserve that status, and what that criteria consists of...

"When the smoke clears I'm the last bandit," Iggy Azalea raps optimistically on 'Walk The Line', a stand-out track on her long-awaited debut album. Part of a scene jostling with vibrant new female MCs - from 3D Na'tee in New Orleans to Philly girl Asia Sparkes and Nyemiah Supreme from Queens - Azalea has her work cut out for her...

Iggy Azalea is a 23-year-old American South-via-Australia rapper whose geographically ambiguous flow tends to rankle detractors. Her debut album won't necessarily convert the haters. On Don't Need Y'All, she cops Drake's downtempo vibe to painfully derivative effect. Country-influenced 100 sees her stilted flow overpowered by a hook from Atlanta-based production crew Watch the Duck. Impossible Is Nothing suffers from lack of emotion in a song entirely dependent on it...
