Indigenous is a rather successful blues rock band powered by the licks of Nakota native American guitarist Mato Nanji (pronounced 'mah-TOE non-GEE'). In their early years they received several best Native American Music Awards; in the early 2000's several albums peaked on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. For the longest time the band was a family affair, but since 2006 Nanji has basically leading the band, ergo the 'featuring' bit in the title. Mato Nanji: sees the writing on the wall...

Indigenous has made a name for themselves with a blues-rock sound that is filled with blistering guitar solos. On their latest, Broken Lands, the band scales back the intensity and turns up the emotional factor to mixed results. The opener "Should I Stay" is classic Indigenous with the killer guitar solo and contemplative lyrics like the chorus closer, "leaving you is too hard for me to do...

When I was in high school in Grand Island, Neb., in the mid-to-late 1990s, a little-known band called Indigenous was playing small bars like Cunningham's in Kearney, and Knickerbockers in Lincoln. I thought they were just one of the several of local bands that would eventually fizzle and never be heard from again...

You can't get by forever on the novelty of being the world's only Native American-family rock & roll band, but South Dakota brothers-sister-cousin act Indigenous doesn't have to coast. Their gritty, workmanlike rock is solid and unpretentious, as well-schooled in its influences as it is earnest in execution...

Native American, front-man and guitarist-vocalist Mato Nanji is often seen as the next coming of past and present icons Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. An arguable notion for sure, however the artist does surface as a well-rounded blues rocker via his somewhat meaty and convincing vocal delivery. But as a whole, it's all about Nanji's sprightly blues-drenched rockers, topped off with tuneful themes and other minutiae...
