Summary: PIL2 Isn't just a random collection of throw away thug cliches on a disc, there's actually the heart backing it up which gives Ja Rule a face to go with his more personal personality. Though consistency in the track continuity could make this a more well- A sequel to Ja Rule's most successful album that was released over a decade ago, arriving 8 years after Ja Rule's last release, and delivered only to have it's creator be jailed for 28 months instantaniously following its release...

February 28, 2012 was a significant day in the life of Jeffrey Atkins. Notonly was it the onetime chart-topper's 36th birthday, it was also therelease date of "PIL 2," his first album in eight years, billed as a sequelto his 2001 multi-platinum smash "Pain Is Love" and released during anextended jail bid for the Queens native. Releasing sequels to theirrespective opuses has become commonplace among New York's fading stars - inrecent years we've seen everything from "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.....

I know it sounds kind of corny, but it's hard to hate Ja these days. No, he's not the guy that killed you on Holla, Holla anymore, but he makes nice warm-and-fuzzy rap ballads now that all rhyme with baby - who can be mad at that? Ja took the time to locate Bobby Brown and throw him on the first single Thug Lovin, which is actually pretty dope, and some of the joints with Murder INC label mates Ashanti and Charli Baltimore make the grade as well...

Even Hour editor and confirmed hip-hop-aphobe Jamie O'Meara recognized the inherent humour in a Ja Rule "greatest hits" package. Make no mistake, this does contain all the huge hip-pop crossover hits like Always on Time with Ashanti and Livin' It Up with Case, but given the fact that our Canadian streets, from Vancouver to the MTL, are now actually getting shot up, and real kids are dying, do we really need to help a little rap runt running around yelling "murder" every time he exhales...

In hip-hop, the only thing worse than an album with too many cameos is one with not enough. Subpar MCs can disguise wackness with a guest list full of talented homies?it worked for Ja Rule on his first few albums. But when even Charli Baltimore stops returning your calls ... well, that's a sure sign you're in trouble. On his seventh CD, the 31-year-old vet is still likable enough, with his elfin charm and a growl like a bichon frise...

Ja Rule gave only one interview while promoting his latest album, to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, claiming he wanted to patch things up with 50 Cent. Well, so much for that idea: The revenge obsession here is stifling. Blood in My Eye consists almost entirely of antagonistic digs at 50, Eminem and Dr. Dre, none of which are terribly sharp ("I'm-a find out/Where Em Laden's hiding and bomb him")...

Irv Gotti's Murder Inc crew have dominated the hip hop mainstream in the past couple of years with their glossy dilution of G-funk. Ja Rule epitomises the style, mingling macho posturing with gruff attempts at sensitivity; "Thug Lovin'" is the most telling title here. One suspects, too, that his popularity is down to impressive musculature as much as rhyming skills, since his clumsy barking artlessly copies the style of real-deal DMX...

Lift up your nose and get a good whiff of what's in the air around you. It's musty. Like someone wearing a t-shirt full of flop sweat who hasn't had a shower in days to boot. Like someone taking a crap in their pants when put in a life or death situation. Like a body that's been left out in the open, with soft skin involuntarily peeling off. Does it stink? Does it make you want to wretch? Welcome to Ja Rule's world...

R-U-L-E. A few years ago when Def Jam released his debut album "Venni Vetti Vecci" a lot of people though of him as little more than a DMX clone. Indeed though his deep voice and gruff delivery were uncannily like X's at first listen, the hit single "Holla Holla" enabled him to strike out on his own and emerge from the Dark Man's shadow...
