Jackson Browne Reviews

Sound: My impression is that the sound is better than going to his concert. Obviously, still a live recording, so back ground noise is present. Some of the songs have periods of where the guitar fades, his voice however is "clear and present." The overall mix is very "relaxed" and a "pure" live rendition. In the days of looping and, digital add ons to live performances, I love the simple, pure approach to these recordings. // 9 Lyrics and Singing: I am a fan, been a fan for 30 years...

In 1976, the year of The Pretender, Jackson Browne's wife committed suicide and, not surprisingly, he took a break from working. This is a recording of his comeback gig, performing for a radio audience at one of the Public Broadcasting Service's Soundstage series. Browne took the opportunity, a week before his new album's release, to debut two tracks from The Pretender - the title track and The Fuse...

Take a deep breath and then let your mind wander. We're going to take a trip back to 1977 for a little R&R; at the hands of Mr. Jackson Browne. Imagine that you're Browne himself, sitting in front of a cheering audience in Columbia, Maryland, as you and the band launch into the intro to "Running on Empty...

Even those who lost interest in Jackson Browne a decade or two ago may find Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1 ? his first, not counting the audio documentary Running onEmpty ? occasion to realize that dogged sincerity sounds pretty damnedgood in 2005. Answering requests with jokes or compliance, Browne makesa case that he has newer songs worthy of baptism in that fountain ofsorrow along with the obvious classics...

First Disc of Jackson Browne's Running on Empty: The 1977 landmark ? recorded on the road, often in hotel roomsor on the bus ? that marked Browne's artistic peak and actually made youwant to hear songs about rock stars' lives on tour. Bonus Disc: Worthowning if you want to click through over 200 photos taken during thoseshows (a backstage buffet! roadies skateboarding!) or crave a 5.1 DVDAudio remix...

The grind of touring life has to be rock's biggest cliché?but if Jackson Browne has seen a million faces and soft-rocked them all, he once made the cliché matter. This concept album (including a DVD with two inessential unreleased songs) cuts deeper than most road sagas partly because Browne had the brilliant notion of recording on the fly?live moments onstage, at the back of the bus and in hotel rooms...

Browne's default mode has always been delicious melancholy, as this double-CD collection proves once again. A total of 32 songs arranged chronologically from a dozen albums spread over 30 years lays bare the peaks and troughs of his career?the classic troubadour recordings of the '70s, crisis in the '80s when great songs almost got lost in the production, and a return to core values in the '90s...

Jackson Browne's self-titled first album introduced a 23-year-old artist whose sensibility was already so advanced that he was immediately singled out as the quintessential singer/songwriter of the Laurel Canyon school. The LP came out in January 1972 to a chorus of critical hosannas, including my own gushing review in Rolling Stone. "It's not often that a single album is sufficient to place a new performer among the first rank of recording artists," I wrote ? accurately, as it turned out...

More pop CD reviews On his first album of new material since 1996's Looking East, Jackson Browne strikes a convincing balance between the melancholy melodicism of his early work and the sometimes overwrought finger-pointing style that has emerged more recently...
