Janis Ian Reviews

Two songs have long dominated Ian's 45-year career, the first written and recorded when she was still at school. Society's Child was an astonishingly blunt account of interracial romance that earned her both blanket radio bans and a reputation for confronting taboos full-on. It appeared on her self-titled debut album in 1967, as did the equally controversial teen hooker tale Pro-Girl, sadly not included here...

Born Janis Eddy Fink (hence the album title), Janis Ian peaked too soon, writing and recording the classic Society's Child while still in her teens. These albums were her third and fourth, from 1968 and '69, after which she split from Verve, retired from music and spent five years in the wilderness before making a glorious comeback with her career's second timeless single, At Seventeen...

It makes sense that Ani DiFranco (who produces one track) would embrace this tough-minded folk-pop vet. Not surprisingly, Janis Ian, who's best remembered for songs about interracial love (''Society's Child'') and adolescent pain (''At Seventeen''), fills her comeback, Hunger, with tunes about social ills and romantic travails. Nothing new in that, but this out-and-proud sister strums and sings with enough been-there-suffered-that authority to win some Lilith-era converts. B-
