Joe Nichols Reviews

Hot on the trails of his current single "Sunny and 75," Joe Nichols releases "Crickets" a fun, yet traditional country album. Nichols who tends to fly under the radar in the Country genre, brings quite a bit of music to the table (16 songs) this go round. Impressed by "Sunny and 75," I was eager to see what this guy had in store for us. The moment I heard "Yeah," I was immediately drawn in...

If an album as consistently strong as 2009's Old Things New wasn't enough to lift Joe Nichols off of Nashville's B list, the relatively middling It's All Good suggests that maybe he's simply destined to remain a second-string artist. There are worse ways to spend a career, and if It's All Good doesn't build on its predecessor's maturity in any meaningful way, it at least offers a couple of obvious choices for singles that should keep Nichols on country radio playlists for another year or two...

Joe Nichols started recording on a long-gone indie label called Intersound Records as a 19 year old somewhere in the mid-late 1990s. He returned on a major label deal (the new Universal South Records) and has spent the past decade recording hits for the label (now merged with Show Dog Music to form Show Dog-Universal Music)...

A lot has happened in Joe Nichols life between the release of 2007's Real Things and the release of Old Things New but the most important thing in his life is that he now has a clarity that can only come when somebody takes the necessary steps to quit drinking, when they have the problem...

Nothing makes a formalist bare his heart like a 12-step program and some marital enlightenment ("It's Me I'm Worried About," "Cheaper Than a Shrink").

You have to hand it to jingoists Darryl Worley and Montgomery Gentry--they evince heart or hair. This bland, well-respected tastenik is neocon in neotrad clothing. Coding as cannily as Alice Cooper, he opines: "There's nothing wrong with people singing about stuff they believe in, but to get up and give a political speech and give your political views and forget what we came to the show for, that's ridiculous...

Joe Nichols, one of Nashville's few Young Turks who kick it old-school, tookthe easy route on his last outing, III, with sexed-up novelty songs("Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off"). Mercifully, album No. 4 (Real Things) findshim exploring emotional depth again...

Nichols is a hard-times country pro, a lifer who paid his dues on the indie circuit, but also the guy who sang the 2005 karaoke classic "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off." Here, he goes for folkie ballads in the Guy Clark mode ("Real Things"), joining Lee Ann Womack for a glum reading of Merle Haggard's "If I Could Only Fly." He does melancholy well, even if he could have used a few tequila shots -- the highlight is "Let's Get Drunk and Fight."
