Julian is one of Bob's many children trying to escape the old man's shadow. Here Julian is helped by two of his siblings, Stephen and Damian, both superior musical talents than Julian, who just seems to have drawn the short end of the stick. But Julian is growing. While the synth-driven hip-hop-flavoured stuff like the title track and Just in Time work least, the rootsy reggae stuff is pretty good. iPod-worthy track: A Little Too Late.

It's the curse of audibly inherited talent. Whatever your own limitations, which are often considerable, invidious comparisons shadow your every move as you negotiate between the arrogance of the privileged and the confidence of the born performer--and as your fans try not to wish you were someone else. This album has its moments--the well-worked title cut, a little homily called "All I Know," the "in a good way" aside after "everyone's going crazy" (on the dancefloor, he wishes)...

Awake is Julian Marley's 3rd solo endeavor and it is a classical yet modern take on reggae for our time?standing true to its basic reggae rhythms and carrying with it captivating content that was so prominent in his father's music. But this is Julian's voice and he uses it well.
He speaks of love in "Stay With Me" and "Rosehall". In "Oh girl" there is a surprising appearance by rapper Mr. Cheeks as Julian croons in a falsetto voicing. And its not a bad attempt either...

The latest Marley to carry on the family name, Julian explores jazz, blues and rock as well as reggae on Lion in the Morning.
