Kodaline Reviews

Who knows what's going on with Coldplay? Last we checked in with Chris Martin and gang, which admittedly was a while ago, they were singing duets with Rihanna and getting a bit "experimental." Frankly, that's the last thing you want from Coldplay. Good thing Kodaline has stepped in to fill the void. The Irish quartet goes back to basics - melancholy pianos, soaring choruses and a singer who sounds like he could break down in tears at any moment. What more do you need...

Kodaline is a four-piece Irish band. They are also a hardly original four-piece Irish band. Already, the group has earned comparisons to the likes of Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Elbow, Mumford and Sons and U2, and I'd be darned if I didn't hear a little bit of the Waterboys somewhere circa Fisherman's Blues on their debut disc, In a Perfect World (but maybe that's just the Mumford copying showing its obvious influence)...

There's a lot riding on the shoulders of Dublin band Kodaline. With their soft-alternative-indie-rock tendencies their debut EP The Kodaline EP released in September 2012 garnered them a nomination in the BBC Sound of 2013 poll. It's now about 10 months on since then and the four piece are ready to show the world their long player In A Perfect World. If I was to liken their sound they're very Snow Patrol and Elbow and Coldplay with occasional Mumford and Sons moments...

It's hard to believe, but a decade of Coldplay hasn't sated the public's appetite for music made with a figurative wind machine gushing in the wings. Case in point: the debut by this young Dublin quartet, whose speciality is the gusty, disconsolate anthem, is expected to chart at No 1 this week. It will likely hang around the top 10 for months, because Kodaline have already mastered the craft of piling chorus upon unshakable chorus...

In A Perfect World marks the full debut of young Irish four-piece, Kodaline . The band has been busy building a solid next-big-thing reputation on the back of EPs, live gigs, and sizeable YouTube hits. For all that, naysayers label Kodaline as stadium wannabes and no more than an identikit amalgam of the likes of Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Elbow, Mumfords, plus U2 and almost anyone Irish. Me? I think this quartet deserves acknowledgement separate from those usual suspects...

Kodaline have certainly had a quick ascent to the top - at least in radio play fame. Aided undoubtedly by BBC recognition, the four piece from Swords have released three singles to date which epitomise their sound and talent for writing radio-friendly, folk-pop. In A Perfect World does little to alter the plan, although opener 'One Day' immediately offers vocals unlike we've heard from them yet, Steven Garrigan highlighting his lower range which is equally beautiful and just as evoking as his...

Irish band Kodaline have already caused quite a stir, seducing fans and critics alike with their winsome brand of soft-focused, pop-infused folk. Though the C-word (Coldplay) has been used in describing their sound, (the choice of piano over big guitars, Stephen Garrigan's choir-boy tenor) their songs dig deep without the bombastic pomposity of Chris Martin and Co. In A Perfect World is, overall, a fine achievement, demonstrating a talent for well-penend, catchy tunes...
