Kottonmouth Kings Reviews

With remarkable consistency the Kottonmouth Kings release a new album almost every year like clockwork. This keeps a worldwide legion of stoned fans puffing on their latest hit, while keeping the Kings themselves chronically on tour supporting their releases. "Mile High" is the latest of these releases to spread like ditch weed, but I must confess that at times the whole thing can seem incredibly insular. You either know the Kings or you don't - you either see them on tour or you don't...

If Proposition 420 completely decriminalized marijuana in Cali tomorrow, the Kottonmouth Kings would be the first to stand on the capitol steps in Sacramento and light a big fat joint to celebrate. Their advocacy is self-declared in their name, describing one of the most common side effects of a medicinal toke (or so I've heard)...

This album can be hated on several levels. You can just hate it for its incredibly dated rap rock, which is generously made up of equal parts awful rap and awful rock. You can hate it for the "witty" concept they came up with: making a supposedly environmentally themed album which is actually just about weed (because weed grows on the Earth, man!)...

Kottonmouth Kings' previous CD titles include Hidden Stash and High Society, so the hook is clear: This seven-piece pot posse from California's Orange County loves its chronic. "I got two states of mind: stoned and asleep," Johnny Richter raps on "4-2-0." On their kaleidoscopic fifth album, they add some pop flavor to their usual punky hip-hop Slurpee. The largely acoustic first single, "Positive Vibes," sounds like Sublime at a campfire hootenanny...

Twelve years. Ten albums. It's been a long, strange and defiant TRIP for the Kottonmouth Kings, the unapologetically proud suburban potheads of hip-hop. "Unapologetic" is the key to their success. Many rap artists with pale skin or middle class backgrounds automatically start on the defensive, assuming they'll be attacked for not having the authenticity to contribute to what's traditionally been a poor and urban defined artform...

"12 Years, 10 Albums, and 1 Big Daze." No disrespect is meant toward Arrested Development or Speech, but that's the best way I can think of to summarize the Kottonmouth Kings. Their name implies getting stoned, their songs don't hide that fact one bit, and if you've ever been to their concerts... well let's just say gigantic blunts and large marijuana flags wouldn't be out of place as stage props. When the smoke fills the air at one of their stage shows, it's NOT from a fog machine...

For over ten years, the Kottonmouth Kings have been ignored by mostmainstream media outlets while continuing to release album after album. Inthe process, their fan base has continued to flourish and grow, much likethe pot and mushrooms they openly indulging in. A common belief is thatmarijuana usage expands the mind and allows for more creativity...

Sound: Kottonmouth Kings have been around for a while even though MTV and radio doesn't play any of their songs. This is the King's seventh albulm and definitely one of their best. It's definitely an improvement from Fire It Up. Dj Bobby B creates some phat beats on this cd especially on "The Munchies," "King Klick," "Put It Down" and many more. The CD tends to be more rap than rock but there are a couple of punk tracks like "Slow Suicide" and "Revolution" thanks to Daddy X...

"This is Rip Hop," according to the Kottonmouth Kings, a blend of punk rock and hip-hop music. With a (by hip-hop standards) huge, booming sound to their productions, the Kings combine an overtly aggressive musical sound to their themes of anarchy and free spirit ? all filtered through a haze of marijuana smoke. Rock-rap hybrids like this are always interesting for an open-minded fan, because the combination of the two genres always have the potential for something truly special...
