Krokus Reviews

First let me say that when I approached Keavin Wiggins (Editor-In-Chief of antiMusic.com) about being able to get back into writing reviews of new albums from the bands and artists we all love. I did it thinking that there would be "no way" - Too many things had probably changed in the last 6 years since I did anything for him. It was a shot in the dark. And low and behold, Mr. Wiggins was still there and so was antiMusic.com...

An AC/DC reference is compulsory in any Krokus review, so we might as well get it out of the way early. Yes, Swiss metal lifers Krokus are AC/DC soundalikes, and if they (or their fans) tire of that comparison, the band has never embraced their Aussie counterparts' sound more faithfully than on the new Dirty Dynamite. Which means, of course, that it's an exceptionally easy album to digest for those who think rock kick-assitude peaked in 1979 with Highway to Hell...

"With 'Hoodoo,' Krokus has come up with a decent album to drink beer to in a room full of friends, and that's probably good enough." For more than 30 years, Krokus has been creating AC/DC-style rock, complete with a singer who's up there with Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree when it comes to the ability to win a Bon Scott soundalike contest. If that's what you're looking for, the band's latest disc, "Hoodoo" ought to be right up your alley...

There is very little to say about Krokus' Hoodoo. The album marks the first studio collaboration of the original members in twenty years and its sound dates back even farther. While they can advertise, merchandise and theorize as much as they want about being fierce and fresh, the album is anything but. In essence, it's a stale and lifeless version of the hard rock 70s sound. If they ever weren't just an imitation AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, they are now...

The obligatory live set from Swiss pop-metal merchants Krokus, Alive & Screamin' represents the most successful phase of the band's career by collecting most of their biggest early-'80s hits. Unfortunately, the live (?) performances contained here are merely effective, without ever truly igniting into anything approaching the remarkable or even memorable...

Why does an MC go from preaching a positive, uplifting message of African-American pride to celebrating drugs and promiscuity? Why does a serious jazz saxophonist suddenly give up hard bop and start emulating Kenny G? And why does a gutsy, risk-taking alternative country artist end up playing it safe and turning into yet another Shania Twain or Garth Brooks clone...

Thirty years after their self-titled debut album first appeared, Krokus are back for more with 2006's Hellraiser. Prior to the album's recording, the group suffered quite a blow when longtime guitarist Fernando Von Arb (who had appeared on seemingly just about every single Krokus album) had to exit the band due to complications from wrist surgery...

Swiss rockers Krokus had already been around the bend a number of times by the time they scored their first (and only) American platinum success with 1983's Headhunter. Shameless bandwagon hoppers that they were (their origins lay in cheesy, late-'70s progressive rock), the band at least deserve credit for mixing their musical stew just right on this occasion...
