When it does manage to achieve that careful stability, though, Some Are Lakes is damn near aching with potential-durable after repeated listens and poised for critical flattery. It's a shame to see Land of Talk remain under the radar, but they may just have to wait it out awhile longer.

Land of Talk leading lady Elizabeth Powell has managed an impressive feat in her musical career: with her ever-changing line-up of bandmates, she's made one album and a handful of EPs that are remarkably similar yet are still, somehow, also remarkable on their own merits. There's a fine line between knowing what works for you and writing the same record, and Powell navigates it with the balance and finesse of a seasoned tight-rope walker...

The opening track 'Yuppy Flu' immediately demands the full attention of the audience. Strong simple drums and catchy guitar riffs throughout, matched by a voice full of woes and yet strangely attractive; perhaps not a hit single, but certainly one strong enough to encourage an audience to continue listening...

One of this group's central strengths is the collision between their driving noisy rock and Liz Powell's voice, which sounds like a tougher, better and more wry version of Edie Brickell. Or maybe Cat Power. But those comparisons blow, because the musicians backing up Powell deserve props too, and I love that instead of cleaning up the tracks to make them more radio friendly, they continually fuzz, distort and growl the up-tempo indie into something much cooler...

One could talk about Some Are Lakes producer Justin "Bon Iver" Vernon, or Liz Powell's recent induction into the Broken Social Scene cult, or the group's lineup switcheroo, but any talk about Land Of Talk's full-length debut really comes down Powell's voice and songwriting. Either you're down with her tough, emotionally stretched-taut delivery and her heart-stabbing lyrics, or (in my opinion) you're a player-hater...

After just one listen through Cloak and Cipher, the debut LP from indie rock trio Land of Talk, one thing becomes truly apparent: Lead singer Elizabeth Powell should be a force to be reckoned with in rock music for years to come. Powell's vocal prowess is formidable and will leave you wanting to hear more...

After spending an entire North American tour supporting Broken Social Scene after the release of debut Some Are Lakes, you'd think that Land of Talk would be be eager to dial back the Canadian Indie Power Pop Bombast a little. Indeed, after the group translated some of the raw energy of its breakout EP Applause Cheer Boo Hiss into the more graceful, delicately arranged pieces found on Lakes, it seemed as if Land of Talk were destined to slip into the recesses of comfortable, regal indie rock...

Any album that open with slashing scuzzed guitars and indie grrl vocals like some energized P J Harvey acolytes fired up by the righteous disassociation with the populist movement should only be a good thing in my book. As openers go, Speak To Me Bones ticks all the right boxes in a pseudo Rid of Me way, full of slashing angular guitar chords and squiffy harmonics conjuring with attitude, heartbreak and venom...
