I got around to these recordings by the usual route....I was reading Breakfast of Champions and allusions to the poem were made on occasion. This piqued my curiosity so I ordered the book and decided to study the Bernstein Symphony #2 as well. I already had a recording on Naxos that I had dipped into without much of a response on my part. Considering that perhaps I should try another recording I did some research and ordered the Hyperion recording...

Summary for the Busy Executive: Music man. This two-CD set documents Bernstein's activities in the 1940s, when the composer was in his twenties. Bernstein landed in New York at the start of the decade and started to scrap his way to a secure career there. He began as a songwriter on Tin Pan Alley, with the byline "Lenny Amber" (in German, Bernstein means "amber")...

Be honest: would your first port-of-call be Bournemouth for this repertoire? Well, hang on just one second: there's pedigree here, if you choose to look for it...

Everybody loves a great photo opportunity, and what better one hasthere been lately than the demolition of the Berlin Wall? So therewas Lenny last Christmas, leading an assembly of players from theBavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, theKirov Theatre Orchestra of Leningrad, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Orchestre de Paris in twoperformances of Beethoven's symphonic swan song, in West and EastBerlin concert halls...

Leonard BernsteinA Total Embrace: The Conductor comprises a three disc collection of Bernstein's best conducting efforts. In roughly chronological order, the tracks span from recordings made from 1950 to 1975, the prime years before his performances became erratic due to his failing health. Disc one covers the 1950s, disc two the early 1960s, and the third disc is devoted to the remaining years. Leonard Bernstein's entry into the conducting world in 1943 was dramatic. He became an overnigh...
