Life of Agony is an alternative metal band from Brooklyn, NY who are known to incorporate hardcore and thrash elements into their music, however they have a wide range of influences, including reggae (Bob Marley) and alternative rock (Radiohead). They formed in 1989 after Keith Caputo was looking for musicians to form a rock band, he eventually recruited his cousin, Joey Z on guitar and long-time friend Alan Robert on bass. Type O Negative's drummer Sal Abruscato was hired to record albums 'River Runs Red' and 'Ugly' on drums. Life Of Agony Reviews

'Broken Valley' is the fourth Album of the Brooklyn-based Hardcore outfit Life of Agony and it represents a real move forward for a Band who were at the forefront of the Metal/Hardcore cross over of the mid -nineties. They're first album 'River Runs Red' was excellent, 'Ugly' was excellent sporadically and 'Soul searching Sun' was very ****ing far from excellent. So, how does 'Broken Valley' shape up? OK, but not great...

You know what we need? Another fucking crybaby metal band. Seriously. Who can get enough of those hurtbag lyrics ("If the world has let you down," "I was beating my head in against the wall" etc., ad nauseam) strung around every garbage riff you've ever heard? I can't get enough, especially near the middle of the album when the piano power ballad kicks in. That's when I bring out the razor and cut myself. It's starting to hurt, but apparently that's the point.

Life Of Agony may have always been associated with the New York hardcore scene but their brand of emotionally charged music (no, not "emo"!) was always far bigger, bolder and brasher than that tag might imply. On Broken Valley - their first album for eight years after splitting up in the late '90s - the break with that label is complete but their ability to create cracking, aggressive tunes has not diminished one iota...

Sound: I was more then thrilled when I discovered that Life Of Agony had reunited with original vocalist Keith Caputo in 2003, in fact I was downright giddy. Although it seemed the band had reunited for a few shows in their home-state and a live DVD, I was hoping for a new record, and in 2005 we got it. "Broken Valley" is an incredible album from start to finish...

The 2003 reunion of Keith Caputo, Joey Z., Alan Robert, and Sal Abruscato -- together, the classic Life of Agony lineup -- was captured on the rousing, often explosive River Runs Again, and fans ate it up because everyone still remembered how powerful River Runs Red was. But the reunion also spawned Broken Valley, and this album might be the real gift...

During their ten-year run, that is, 1989-1999, Life of Agony were neither complacent nor predictable. Stylistically, the New York-based alternative metal/alternative rock band reinvented themselves more than once, and there were some lineup changes along the way. The changes that they went through were both good and bad: good because they never got stuck in a creative rut and had a desire to forge ahead, bad because some of their albums were uneven and inconsistent...

For listeners unaccustomed to blistering, noisy metal, Life of Agony will be agonizing. However, fans of the genre will find the band to be among the best of the mid-'90s, capable of spitting out razor-sharp riffs. What makes Ugly work is the band's grasp of sonic texture -- they can make even their quiet moments menacing.

With their unique combination of New York hardcore, metal, and a touch of spooky grunge vaguely reminiscent of Alice in Chains, Life of Agony got their career off to a fine critical and commercial beginning with their debut release, River Runs Red. Brooklynite veterans of their city's legendary hardcore scene, vocalist Keith Caputo, guitarist Joey Z., and bassist Alan Robert were joined by former Type-O Negative drummer Sal Abruscato in 1993...
