Lila Downs Reviews

Björk's 2011 iPad album Biophilia could have used some of Lila Downs' mixed-media soul. Commissioning 15 retablos, Mexican home-altar-type paintings, to interpret the album's 14 tracks, Pecados y Milagros - Sins and Miracles - the veteran Oaxaca, Mexico, singer and song stylist bares an inebriating Latin romance cribbed from a cantina mural. Shots are banging off sheet metal tables from the first track, "Mezcalito," huffing with a percussive whoop of brass and bajo (bass)...

By turns mordant, melancholy and manic, Lila Downs is utterly Mexican. But while she gleefully gallops through rancheras and mariachis, the Cantina she hangs out in delivers more than the usual margarita-laced clichés. On "La Tequilara", for instance, she flirts with hip hop, mocking the folksy phrases even as she intones them...

Lila Downs has always liked to surprise. Born to a Scottish-American father and Mexican-Indian mother, and brought up in both Mexico and the US, she started out by mixing Mexican styles with American folk-blues and jazz, before moving on to the explore the Mexican blues, the Cancion Ranchera bar-room ballads...

The start of an album should be like a first kiss, seductive, full of anticipation. Unfortunately, the first four songs on Lila Downs' latest are so surprisingly ordinary and cacophonous you might have to double-check that you are, indeed, listening to the otherwise divine Ms. Downs. The Mexican-American world music maven is a skilled border crosser, fusing the traditional with the contemporary to make it new as on 2006's sublime La Cantina...

Lila Downs widened her potential audience when she was featured in Salma Hayek's Frida flick, appearing on its soundtrack. She was introduced to WOMAD in 2002 and toured this June in a package with Yusa and Susana Baca. Lila grew up in the Sierra Madre mountains, down in Mexico's Oaxaca state, then up in Minnesota, USA. She started singing Mariachi at the age of eight, going on to tour with two bands. She now lives in Coyoacan...

Mexican/American Lila Downs has one of those vocal styles that can only be described as an acquired taste. Generally dwelling in the lower, huskier regions of her range, she also has a habit of shooting off into high, squealing netherzones à la Peruvian diva Yma Sumac. This can be a bit disconcerting...

Mexican/American Lila Downs has one of those vocal styles that can only be described as an acquired taste. Generally dwelling in the lower, huskier regions of her range, she also has a habit of shooting off into high, squealing netherzones à la Peruvian diva Yma Sumac. This can be a bit disconcerting. Some would even call her a bad singer with a great voice, depending on their appreciation of her mannered, ventriloquial style, which regularly inhabits different personae from song to song – .....

Mexican-American singer Lila Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian mother and Anglo-American father, and she voices the hopes and struggles of both Mexican immigrants on this side of the border, and those of the indigenous peoples of Mexico. The diminutive singer, decked out in Indian finery and Frida Khalo-braids (she actually made a cameo in the 2003 biopic, Frida), is a formidable presence onstage; radiating moral authority and a hunger for social justice...
