Malcolm Arnold was a very good composer, and he seemed to enjoy conducting as well. His late efforts are very late, and show him as a frail and weak man. So these early Everest recordings - as reissued here by Countdown Media - are a valuable introduction to one of England's more accessible composers. If downloads are your thing, iTunes has a download, but I prefer the Amazon-manufactured CDs, which also include the original LP liner notes...

When composers take on their own work the results always takes on a special significance, Toss in the fact that all but Beckus were premiere recordings at the time of this 1992 release, and everything becomes more important. Arnold never did get very much attention, either on these shores or his own, but a disc like this can only help the cause. Why, you might ask, would a reviewer write about an album released 1992? There are several reasons...

The popularity of orchestras performing music from videogames has reached the point where even the London Philharmonic Orchestra is jumping onboard. Not only have they performed a series of concerts, they've also recorded the obligatory CD, for those looking to add some class to their gaming. Killing Joke members Youth and Jaz Coleman thought symphonic versions of songs from Pink Floyd classics Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall would be a good idea, and they were half right. Compose's Lerner, Gershwin & Loewe collects some of the composers' classic songs, as performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The album includes Gershwin's "Our Love Is Here to Stay," "Summertime," and "Foggy Day," and Lerner & Loewe's "They Called the Wind Maria," "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." An entertaining collection of instrumental standards.
