"Daniel Variations" is Steve Reich's 2006 memorial tribute to murdered journalist Daniel Pearl, and it announces the nature of its subject matter right from the first moments. The piece opens with clangorous, anguished dissonant chords dominated by four pianos; by the time the chorus enters a few seconds later, proclaiming a text from the Book of Daniel, there's no doubt that this is a darker and more gnarled piece than Reich has ever written before...
