Machine Head Reviews

The longevity of Oakland's most dogged headbangers Machine Head is a truly remarkable thing. In 2013 it will be 19 years since the foursome released their amazing debut album Burn My Eyes, 13 years since they lost their way in the nu-metal wave and six since they returned to form with the stunning The Blackening...

Machine Fucking Head Live is a double live album made up of 15 of Machine Head's best known tracks recorded at various shows around the globe during last year's world tour in support of the band's seventh studio album, Unto the Locust. For those who had the pleasure of witnessing the Oakland-based metal legends live last year you will be aware that Machine Head totally killed it night after night...

Sound: While I only have this album and the masterpiece that is burn my eyes by Machine Head I look at this album and think, the intensity in the music/metal of burn my eyes is fading only really the first 4 songs really keep it alive, while saying this the sound of this album is good it I very well produced but a tad overly produced, mr. Flynn's voice is nowhere near the flaming heat it has been but too me he proves he can do some melodic singing...

Sound: Well its Machine Heads first official live album release. It was recorded in London at the Brixton Academy and was during the Supercharger tour. What can I say? Machine Head do no wrong. The sound on this album is absolutely fantastic. It could not get any better. You feel like you are at the gig (yes a cliche when describing live albums/dvds) but it is so true. The guitars are perfect, so too are the bass and drums, but of course the stand out is Robbs simply outstanding voice...

Sound: Machine Head's sinister, dark, concrete tone says everything about them, and especially this album. A lot of harmonics are used here to increase the metallic nature of the riffs like "The Rage To Overcome" and "Davidian". Very good drumming and bass work. Chris Kontos sounds like he's on the adrenaline pills for weeks, while the bass is heavy and sludgy like it is with Pantera and Sepultura...

Sound: It's hard to believe that only a few years back that Machine Head was going through what many in the press a "decline." The discouraging description came as a result of being dropped from Roadrunner Records and the seemingly lackluster record sales of 2001's Supercharger, but events like those are not likely to repeat after the band's latest release. The Blackening proves that it could very quickly be co-headlining rather than opening for groups like Lamb Of God...

Sound: The standard edition of the album has 7 tracks, but the deluxe collector's edition has 10 tracks, and this is the copy that I have and am reviewing. Machine Head began working on "Unto The Locust" in late 2010, and had completed the album and released the "advance mix" of the single "Locust" in June 2011...

Sound: The band's best album since Burn My Eyes. No question about it, this is some heavy stuff! Whilst there are some so-so tracks (Wipe The Tears comes to mind) the majority of the CD is mindblowing. Imperium starts off with a calm steady tempo then goes into a bulldozing flurry of metal and smashes your face off. Left Unfinished is Robb Flynn at his most personal, as the song is about his life and his adoption as a child...

One of the most eagerly anticipated metal albums of 2011 was Machine Head's follow up to their 2007 world beating masterpiece The Blackening. The question on every Machine Head fan's lips was "Will they be able to match The Blackening?" and my god, with Unto The Locust did they ever?! Once again they released a near flawless masterpiece...
