Mariachi El Bronx Reviews

If ever there was a band that reinforced the essence of punk in the modern age it"s The Bronx. It"s not just their hardcore principles - there are many bands reading from that hymn sheet. It"s the kind of spirit that means that upon being asked to perform acoustic for a TV show, they didn"t decide the most man-damning tack to take would be to pull down their pants and roast a flaming turd on the studio floor. Nope. It was to do it mariachi-style...

In March of last year were invited to take part in an evening of Mariachi music staged at London's Barbican centre. The leading practitioners of the form were also invited to appear - but, and at least to the casual ear, the group reviewed here stood equal to such esteemed company. This might not be such a surprise were it not for the fact that, by day, Mariachi el Bronx are known as simply : a blood-and-guts punk rock turn, very much a modern day equivalent of ...

Given the quality and rate of release of these mariachi records, it's possible we may never hear the punk rock Bronx ever again. This is the second straight mariachi release from the L.A.-based hardcore and punk unit, and it's just as good as the first. To be clear, this isn't an attempt at humour, irony or the incorporation of mariachi sounds into hard rock. This is straight mariachi with frontman Matt Caughthran dialing down his vocals to the point where he could join Los Lobos...

Mariachi El Bronx is the mariachi side-project of LA hardcore-punk band The Bronx with a now-expanded lineup including Vincent Hidalgo (son of Los Lobos' David Hidalgo). Their second album is a shockingly gorgeous, beautifully executed set of original mariachi songs combining the rhythmic acoustic guitars, blaring horns, swelling strings and various Latin percussion of mariachi with Matt Caughthran's plaintive vocals and heartfelt lyrics.

Ever wanted your favourite punk band to go Mexican? Really?! Intrigue has surrounded The Bronx ever since they announced they were doing a Marachi album (in the tradition of Mexican travelling musicians....just watch Desperado for background). I assumed it would be a half-arsed, piss-take bonus disk. But no, they've done it properly. And its freaking me out. I'm not afraid to say I'm a little out of my depth. I mean what was the last mariachi album you listened to...

I've been looking forward to this album since Mariachi El Bronx supported their punk alter egos, The Bronx, earlier this year. That night, Mariachi El Bronx played a set that opened eyes and should have kicked into touch any ideas that this was some sort of novelty/comedy offshoot. The opening duo of Cell Mates and Litigation set the scene: a combination of brass, strings and guitar creating a heart-warming, joyous and generally laidback atmosphere...

Never was a record more a case of 'does what it says on the sleeve' than this fourth studio long-player from Los Angeles-based (usually) hardcore quintet The Bronx: while it continues the band's habit of only ever self-titling their releases (pity poor iTunes), it replaces muscular punk rock with affectionately arranged mariachi rhythms...

Summary: The Bronx head south of the border for more than just a hangover. 7 of 7 thought this review was well written One wouldn't expect a band like the Bronx to dabble in trying their hand at Mariachi music. Firstly, they are a punk rock band. The last time I checked, crusty guitar and vocals that sound like the frontman decided to spend all of the money from their gig checks on Lucky Strikes and hard liquor weren't part of Mexico's distinguished cultural heritage...
