Matt Costa Reviews

Even with three previous albums, it has never been easy to understand Matt Costa. Signed by Jack Johnson to his Brushfire imprint, the West Coast born and raised Costa seemed to be infatuated with a Zombies/Searchers styled Brit Invasion sound one moment only to shift into a Donovan folk picker the next. His retro/UK approach and production was so convincing, you'd have to read his bio to know he wasn't born and raised in England...

Brushfire Though California's Matt Costa may be best known for sunny, rootsy music akin to his Brushfire brethren, his fourth album is significantly folksier. Recorded in Glasgow, Scotland, the album recalls the quiet, beautiful pop of the U.K. from the '60s and '70s. "Laura Lee," full of acoustic guitar and organ, takes a page from The Beatles, while "Silver Sea" has Led Zeppelin mythological vibes...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare Folk For The Rest Of Us There are few things more American than Southern California. A native of Huntington Beach, Matt Costa's music has always had a breezy nature. But on his latest album, he turned to the rainy British Isles for a new recording location (Glasgow) and, clearly, some inspiration...

"These are the songs that I sing to make our days better," whimpers Matt Costa on the title track of his debut long-player. Alas, the Californian singer-songwriter is sadly mistaken, and Songs We Sing emerges as an anemic album guaranteed to turn even the most dazzling of smiles into a gloomy grimace...

After establishing himself as a modern day troubadour amongst a vibrant SoCal arts scene in 2005 after working with the likes of Tom Dumont of No Doubt on his independently released debut album 'Songs We Sing', Matt Costa found his ambitious attempts at traversing musical genres soon being snapped-up by Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records...

With enough la la la's and high end plucking and strumming to put Brian Wilson back to bed forever, this first single from forthcoming album 'Songs We Sing' is certainly going to be one of those. Cold December comes from the same happy/sad song mould that Brendan Benson and label mate Jack Johnson keep in their back pocket. Although this single doesn't necessarily bring anything new to the table, and the lyrics (I can't fall asleep to your mystery...

A card-carrying member of the California surfer-rock club, where Jack Johnson is president and G. Love secretary, Matt Costa manages to snap out of the haze that's overtaken his contemporaries. As opposed to Johnson's contented acoustic strolls, Costa is willing to let down his guard and test unfamiliar ground, as he does on Vienna, a moody and sparse bossa-nova-like song that features just Costa, his electric guitar and a drum machine...

Unfamiliar Faces marks California-via-Tennessee troubadour Matt Costa's first full commercial release, following a self-titled EP and two further independent albums since 2003. A gifted multi instrumentalist Costa is also an ex-professional skateboarder who turned to music full-time after a serious accident left him laid out for 18 months...
