Memphis May Fire Reviews

Artist: Memphis May Fire Title: Unconditional Label: Rise Records Release Date: 03/25/14 Reviewer: Scott Swan Tracklisting: For some unknown reason, Memphis May Fire has been one of those bands that has escaped from my radar. I just haven't gotten into them. Not by choice really, just more happenstance, I guess. I just knew they seemed to be pretty popular, and I needed see what's going on here...

If there was any question that Memphis May Fire isn't a Christian band, there won't be any longer. Their latest release Unconditional is, top to bottom, crust to core, a Christian record. As recently as last year, the band has acknowledged a Christian faith in at least some of their members, and that it has influenced their songwriting, but denied the Christian moniker. There'll be no denying it anymore. And you know what? Awesome...

Release Date: March 25, 2014 Let's face it, you came to read about how much this record sounded like the last two.You came to the right place. Dallas, Texas's Memphis May Fire has released The Hollow for the third time and it's still selling. Rise Records can draw those teenagers in like moths to flames (no pun intended). The album kicks us off with a track titled "No Ordinary Love" and about 15 seconds into the song I was bored already...

Release Date: June 26, 2012 Memphis May Fire's sophomore record, The Hollow, was a bit of a sophomore slump. They ditched their bold Southern drawl and left behind the rock 'n roll feel to pursue a metalcore route not unlike other Rise bands. It was, at best, a letdown. However, their third record, Challenger, proves that the third time is the charm...

Sound: Metalcore is often criticized for its generic sound and lack of originality, but who ever said that things tried and true still couldn't be used? Memphis May Fire's 3rd full-length entitled "Challenger" is nothing you have not heard in some way shape or form but it succeeds. The overall production is great I must add, as a generalization I would say that most metal core albums have a clear focus on the drums, guitar, and vocals but the album sounds very crisp and nothing is left unheard...

The downfall of Memphis May Fire on their previous releases was a lack of focus and polish. They had their metalcore-lite and post-hardcore formula dialed in, and they stuck in a safe zone where everything could be thrown into their kitchen sink's melting pot. On Challenger, the Texas band try their best to forge an identity for themselves. It may not be the identity some us had hoped for, like showing more promise in the contemplative melodic realm of Thrice or Underoath as many peers have...

*starts head banging* MMF is here going strong on this album. The first track is what they will be opening with on Warped Tour this year and it's a "heavy-one-minute-get-pumped" song. "Alive in the Lights" is the second and first real track on this album and it mixes the old MMF with the new Rise Records style perfectly. If you watched the video with McGregor then you know he really wanted to add the southern style riffs into this album along with the post-hardcore breakdowns that we all love...

Let me set the record straight: my review of The Hollow might've left a few confused over whether I really liked Memphis May Fire or not. The summary is that I enjoyed the album, even if I found it to be generic at times. Nonetheless, the release found regular rotation throughout 2011 (the track 'The Sinner' was my ringtone for 3 months) and I looked forward to hearing Challenger. And now that I have...Holy cheeseballs, Batman! MMF just upped the stakes...

Before we enter, one would be advised to prepare himself/herself for the audio assault about to land. In fact, Memphis May Fire can confidently sit amongst the current roster at Rise Records (Miss May I, Emarosa, Of Mice & Men, The Bled etc.) with the kind of muscular post-hardcore they're generating. The Dallas bunch provide all the necessary elements to build a strong metalcore album with some face-crushing guitar-work, clean/growly vocal work and the essential breakdown sections...
