After many years of building up their brand on the west coast, California-based The Moonshine Bandits broke out nationwide with Whiskey & Women. Two years later, they're back with Calicountry, their first album released through Average Joes Entertainment's Backroads Records. And for as entertaining as previous albums from the band were, nothing has sounded as strong as Calicountry, both lyrically and melodically. Quite frankly, the album takes the band to a completely new level...

Moonshine isn't the
dirty word it used to be. In fact the popularity
of the Discovery Channel show that's (allegedly) about people
making illegal liquor while staying one step ahead of the law has
helped bring a term associated with rural i.e. "country" living
to national prominence. It's also created a confusing milieux of
"legal" and "illegal" shine in the marketplace, as distillers
rush to bring out products labeled "moonshine" even though the
very definition of shine used to be...

Don't feel bad if you're experiencing a case of deja vu right now. I was too when the label asked me if I was going to review the copy of Moonshine Bandits' "Whiskey and Women" they just sent me. There are times that even I'm surprised by bands that come across my desk and one of those band's is Moonshine Bandits, a California-based duo who have built up as rabid a fan base in the western states as Colt Ford has built up in the southeast. The band's sound isn't not too far from what Colt does, mixing roots music and country sounds with hip hop vocal rhymes and percussion. On Whiskey and Women (Deluxe Shiner Edition) the band showcases their sound over the course of 16 mostly fun tracks...

"I'm a whiskey drinkin' S.O.B. If you don't like that then you won't like me"Reviewing music in general or being a critic in particular is rife with contradictions. The idea is that one is supposed to be totally dispassionate and completely objective as a writer, yet no critic I know grew up a test tube baby force fed Public Enemy records by scientists in white lab coats...

This Review was written by Roughstock reader Betty Hames. Within the first beats of "For The Outlawz" featuring Colt Ford, You instantly know that The Moonshine Bandits' blend of country music is not Taylor Swifts' country (nor is it Waylon's for that matter). On their new album Whiskey and Women, the California natives call upon a strong group of friends to help craft the Suburban Noize Records release...
