Mudhoney Reviews

A friend of mine once professed Mudhoney's punk rock authenticity because they gravitated to clubs where they were level with the audience--literally. If their stage didn't happen to be the same floor on which everyone stood to watch, it was never very high off the floor either. Literally and metaphorically, Mudhoney was a band that never wanted to look down on their fans or anyone else...

I've never actually seen Mudhoney play live. In 1998, I watched them do a soundcheck with "A Thousand Forms of Mind". For reasons too complicated, I could not stay for the actual show. In 2008 they came to my hometown but it was my firstborn's first night home from the hospital. A good friend of mine attended; I did not. Not long ago I got to review a live DVD that documented one of their first overseas shows in 1988...

Twenty five years after Mudhoney rose from the ashes of the Seattle band Green River they are one of the few acts of that era still going strong, relatively free of the drama that surrounded many of their contemporaries who lost band members, split up or morphed into superstars. They just keep hanging around doing pretty much exactly the same thing they've been doing since they announced their arrival with the now seminal punk statement 'Touch Me I'm Sick'...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare Mudhoney Does It Again In about as much time as it takes to order and receive a subpar delivery pizza with all the fixings, Mudhoney has reaffirmed that they've stayed true to themselves despite a five-year absence. Sure, they've regaled audiences with the occasional live performance in the interim, but not since the double decade celebration of 2008 throwback The Lucky Ones has Mudhoney released an album...

Music Reviews Mudhoney Vanishing Point (Sub Pop) Buy it from Insound The story goes that in the early days of Sub Pop, they would decide whether or not to sign an act by watching them perform live. If the bands put on an impressive show, then Sub Pop would sign them up. Signing loads of exciting bands means your label starts producing loads of exciting music, and few can match Mudhoney. Take that "WOOOOOOOW...

Time was that you'd hardly expect Mudhoney to last until the end of the year, yet here they are, these fine purveyors of snot-nosed garage rock, about to celebrate their quarter of a century. Of all the bands to have emerged from the Pacific Northwest at the arse end of the 80s who, in all seriousness, would have bet on Mudhoney being the ones to have made it so far? After all, this was the brashest and most juvenile band on the block but, just as importantly, they were the most fun...

Subjects covered in the lyrics to Vanishing Point, Mudhoney's ninth LP and first in five years: Getting hassled at the grocery store; being proud of having a small penis; coming back from the dead to little fanfare; disliking Chardonnay. As much as there will ever be a personal Mudhoney record, it looks like Vanishing Point is it...

www.subpop.com BY MIKE SHANLEY There's no place like home/ and I never, ever wanna go home again," Mark Arm sings in "In This Rubber Tomb." It's an ironic line, considering that he and his Mudhoney co-horts sound right at home. He's wailing in the same frantic way and they're piling on the power chords like it's 1990, or somewhere there about. Some of us have often wondered why it was Nirvana and not Mudhoney that blew the doors down in 1991...
