Mushroomhead Reviews

Sound: Mushroomhead's music in this album is great. Mushroomhead has matured with XIII in numberous ways. They have mellowed out in some songs and gone deeper then ever with their music adding acoustic sound as well as both J mann and J. Nothing singing simutaneously (in such songs as Thirteen) // 8 Lyrics and Singing: In the lyrical standings i would have to say it is relatively similar to past albums...

Sound: Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children - a quirky title inspired by the 80's comic book of the same name - does take various twists in turns thematically/emotionally and does indeed relay a bit of a storybook feel. That being said, the seventh album by the alt-metal band Mushroomhead isn't necessarily a huge musical departure...

What is it about the Midwest that makes its metal heads so sullen? By nature, heavy metal isn't a shiny happy genre, but the headbangers in America's breadbasket have the gloomy game on lock (Morrissey, eat your vegetarian heart out). Is it the weather? The winter drags, and it has snowed as late as May in downstate Illinois. Perhaps it's the endless void along highways like Indiana's I-65, which beg you to pull over for a dish of white rice just to liven things up...

"Those looking for a variety of sounds won't be disappointed in the array offered here." With it's creepy combination of lo- and hi-fi sounds, bizarre samples and consistently solid songwriting, Mushroomhead's "Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children" is a good, if not entirely groundbreaking bit of alt-metal. It ought to be enough to silence those who believe this fright-mask-wearing Ohio band to be a second-rate Slipknot...

Unless youâ??re creating timeless music, which very few bands manage to achieve, the universal rule is adapt or die. Now, letâ??s be completely honest, the mid 90s and early 2000s arenâ??t renowned as particularly great eras for metal; the general consensus is that it pretty much sucked, therefore, bands from that era have had to work extra hard to shake off the nu-metal tag and establish themselves as legitimate metal acts...

As original and cool as the music may be on Mushroomhead's major label debut XX, just the fact that they wear masks and have the theatrical element is going to get them clubbed by the throngs still living la vida loca on Slipknot. Don't let it stop you from checking them out. The eight-man, Cleveland (rocks) group has fury and its share of attention-grabbing elements at a time when it's easy to think that all the stones have been rolled in heavy music...

Sound: Mushroomhead, the band that has seen it's share of conflict with Slipknot for their similar set up and garb, is back with a new record, new singer, and unfortunately, not enough consistently creative ideas. The independently released Savior Sorrow has some musically innovative moments that feature inspired hooks and melodies, but for the most part the songwriting does not make as big of an impression as previous albums...

Sound: The sound of Mushroomhead's first self-titled album was more original than the other albums. I love their wide range of influences on all their albums, especially this one. They mix more media with music. And they mix more electric keyboards and synthesizers with hard rock. And the dual vocals give the sound more diversity. The riffs of the guitars where simple yet complex. The drumming did it's job in creating the beat for each sound...

Sound: This is Mushroomhead's sophmore release. This sound didn't have the same originality as their first, but it was damn close. The sound and music was very impressive, very Mushroomhead-like. They did a really good job of combining industrial metal, rap, techno, and classical. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: My overall impression of the lyrics is this: These lyrics are even better than the lyrics off their first release. They really fit with the mood of the music...
