The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You is the story of Neko Case, prisoner of a neglectful and uncompromising world, taking her life back and running away with it. If it doesn't hit you right away, it's because she has to get to the breaking point before she's ready to jump in her car...

Songs of bereavement and grief on mature sixth... Considering her 20-year career, it makes sense that Neko Case has moved through a host of different identities. Probably best known as Case the New Pornographer, there's also the Case of '90s acts Cub, Maow, The Sadies and The Corn Sisters. There's Case the self-deprecating Twitter wit, prone to posting butt jokes and photos of the cows on her Vermont ranch, a quite different persona to the woman partially visible through her increasingly rugged...

The point at which Neko Case twisted her country sound into something stranger and more magical, notably 2002's Blacklisted and 2006's Fox Confessor Brings The Blood, marks her peak. Like 2009's Middle Cyclone, her latest album is less surprising musically, but the lyrics mark this as her most personal album yet. Finally, she's allowing us to see the real Neko. The album's first half is swamped in confused gender and parental issues...

Neko Case has always been difficult to pigeon hole, allowing her a certain sense of freedom to record when and what she likes. The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, her sixth studio album, is more abrasive and confrontational than previous work. An album recorded in the midst of personal grief and adversity, songs start and stop without warning ('Wild Creatures' ends abruptly with the heartbreaking lyrics "there's no Mother's hand to quiet me") but...

It's never really mattered what Neko Case has been going on about, so long as that Voice is in play. Her ***kicking, take-no-prisoners vocal prowess has always been her defining trait, tied up inextricably with a combustible personality and a very real vibe that this is an artist who will do anything, anytime, anywhere - Northwestern punk groups, honky-tonk country standards, power-pop deans the New Pornographers. It's a Voice that demands superlatives...

"I was surprised when you called me a lady / 'Cuz I'm still not so sure that's what I want to be," Neko Case sings on "I'm From Nowhere" on her latest album The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. But she doesn't really sound so unsure: Other than dropping a few F-bombs, Case sounds nothing but ladylike here, as she coos her way through a dozen pleasant-sounding songs that bear little resemblance to her brash alt-country beginnings or to her...

Neko the warrior. Six albums in, and I'm still getting my head chopped off by her music. I'll find myself blandly thinking "wonder what she's up to," and all of sudden, I'm hit with a voice and musical vision so clear it makes you feel like a shaky, near-shattering windowpane in a wind-driven torrential downpour...
