The first in a series of EP releases, Pro*Whoa! finds Nikka Costa cooing and screeching over six freaky funk tracks reminiscent of Prince and Stevie Wonder. Costa blends the classic 70s funk sound with modern studio wizardry and the result is a collection of tunes that is simultaneously organic and futuristic. She seems to rely perhaps overmuch on the spurned lover motif in her songwriting...

In 2008, it seemed like Nikka Costa had finally found the ideal home at Stax Records. The loose-limbed, retro soul album Pebble to a Pearl allowed the self-proclaimed Funky White Bitch to show off her considerable chops in a way her two major label efforts rarley had, but it still wasn't the star-making turn that it should've been. So now Costa has started her own label, and she explores the newfound freedom that brings on her Pro*Whoa...

Nikka Costa is the white chick answer to Lenny Kravitz. On her 2001 debut, she delivered pleasantly derivative funk, rock and soul, scoring a hit with the slinky R&B; single (turned?Tommy Hilfiger jingle) "Like a Feather." Costa's latest shies away from that tune's addictive hip-hop beats for deeper forays into pop-rock...

Nikka Costa is a rare treasure; a one-time child star who has grown into an unpretentious, genuinely talented adult. Listening to "Everybody Got Their Something" there is no doubt that she was signed to Cheeba Sound (home of D'Angelo) on the basis of having a fabulous voice and some great songs, rather than her precocious childhood. But what a childhood...

Clearly, this bell-bottomed chanteuse, the offspring of legendary big band arranger Don Costa, has learned all there is to know about crossbreeding songcraft with ass thump funk. Everybody Got Their Something, an intoxicating starburst of self affirming R&B;, bears a strong resemblance to the sultry throwdowns of former Prince side persons Wendy and Lisa, albeit with moderne hip-hop filigree. An audacious, fresh as a daisy debut.

The second stab at Stateside success by Nikka Costa, can'tneverdidnothin', who had a European hit asa child, is a bubblegum-funk confection full of screeching, hollering, and contrived "yo' mama" jive talk. When Costa's not evoking BarbaraBillingsley's scene-stealing appearance in 1980's Airplane!, she'splaying it safe with ballads ("Fatherless Child") that recall nearlyidentical moments from her superior U.S. debut, 2001's Everybody GotTheir Something...

Poor Nikka.Long before acertain beehived Brit hip-cocked her wayinto the spotlight, the American-bredCosta was working the retro-soul whitegirlgrowl like a pro, as evidenced on herexcellent, funked-out 2000 debut,Everybody's Got Their Something (coproduced, coincidentally ? or not! ? byAmy Winehouse collaborator Mark Ronson).Alas, while an increasingly beleagueredWinehouse may have abdicatedthe throne by personal default, Costawon't likely step in to replace her with Pebble to a Pearl...
