Nine Inch Nails Reviews

Nothing-Columbia One key aspect of Trent Reznor's artistic scope that doesn't seem to be conveyed enough by the folks who write about this sort of thing is the man's aptitude as a pop songwriter. True, many might scoff at considering Nine Inch Nails to be a pop group. But on the same token, how could you not? There aren't too many artists who can spit out a line like "I want to fuck you like an animal" and transform it into an arena-fueled sing-along, right...

In a recent interview, Trent Reznor alluded to feeling restricted creatively when recording under the Nine Inch Nails name. Throughout the 1990s, his band was the benchmark by which all other anxious, brooding electronic rock was measured; Reznor became a scowling poster boy for the alternative era's malcontent youth. It's a persona that almost destroyed--and clearly, still haunts--Reznor, and one it's unlikely he'll ever fully shake, despite cleaning up his life and expanding his musical style...

Over 25 years, eight studio albums, almost 1000 live shows and a list of past members and collaborators stretching into the dozens, Nine Inch Nails remain one of the true survivors of modern rock. After a successful stint in the world of soundtracks and somewhat less successful marital collaboration, the nucleus and architect of all this success, Trent Reznor has dusted off the NIN moniker for new studio album, Hesitation Marks...

As Trent Reznor will tell you on Hesitation Marks, the first Nine Inch Nails record in five years, he's been everywhere, seen everything, and done it all. But unlike artists whose worldliness imports them wisdom, Reznor finds it a burden: to be so far removed from the ferocious recordings that built him a reputation of urgency and disruption, not just older but at this point simply old...

Many people remember where they were, if they are of a certain age, when JFK was shot or, more recently, when the twin towers fell. I happen to remember where I was when I first heard albums and, in particular, Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral, released almost 20 years ago. I was driving in a small city with it playing in my cassette player, and it was an overcast and rainy evening. "Mr...

Like the tectonic plates of a stone heart dragging together... no, that isn't the way to start... He wants you as a slave. He captures you. He lets you go, but stalks you, whispering from the shadows... nor is that... maybe it's best to start at the beginning... The first sound you hear are these little pulses. They're little beats, that tease. Beats that creep quietly. Beats, made by a man (a sampled first beat of a babies heart? Or the snap-crack of a bone...

In his 25-year-career, Trent Reznor has found solace in rebellion. Whether it was his fight against TVT Records in the early 90s, his battle with addiction in the second half of the decade, his fight with pre-conceived notions of what he should sound like or his attack on the music industry all together, the mastermind behind Nine Inch Nails has taken on every obstacle and opponent in his path...

Given how long it used to take Trent Reznor to produce a new Nine Inch Nails album (at least up until With Teeth), perhaps NIN's five years out of the spotlight can be treated less like a breakup and more like a hiatus (hell, that's what the Org's patriarch, Aubin Paul, called it back in 2009). And really, that breakup was more a step away from live performances anyway; Reznor stated at the time of NIN's farewell shows that he would still use the name...

Thank God Trent Reznor dropped the pissed off schtick that hasn't been genuine since the 90s. While his mid 2000s work was admirable in its own right, the aggressive emotions that plagued each album became sillier and less believable as time went on. And yes one could argue that this is the appeal to Nine Inch Nails, as the band's first two albums are still regarded as landmark achievements...
