Depending on when you became a fan of Pat Green, you'll either love or loathe "What I'm For." If you're a fan from his independent days a decade ago, you'll likely be the latter fan while if you're a fan of Pat's Nashville releases (the last three albums), you're likely to enjoy the album, particularly if you loved "Wave On Wave" and songs of that ilk for Pat Green has become nothing if not consistent in his approach to recording mainstream records or songs that have a similar vibe...

Pat Green knew he was on to something when he was playing frat parties at Texas Tech. He cut his teeth rocking partisan crowds, but knew bigger game awaited, as he imbibed Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, and "everything from some really crappy '80s music to the best Motown to a little classical," making for his own potent storytelling formula. It's not hardcore country, and it's not straight-up arena roots rock, but gladly borrows bits of both...

Pat Green hopes a mighty "Cannonball" will break through national mainstream country barriers with his newest release on Nashville's big studio BNA Records. This is the tenth album from a Texan singer/songwriter that has paid his dues playing college parties and clubs, and releasing music independently, in the Lone Star state since 1995. His fiery brand of outlaw country has won legions of fans in his home state, while the rest of the country is just beginning to appreciate his talents...

Nashville also-ran fights the money changers from inside the temple ("What I'm For," "Footsteps of Our Fathers").

It's still a rude shock to see Pat Green, who started out independent and Texas proud, fully absorbed by Nashville. On What I'm For, the country rocker's eighth disc, Green landed producer Dann Huff (Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood), no doubt hoping for some platinum magic. Unlike Cannonball, his last album, Green wrote or co-wrote a majority of the material, and even with Huff's larger-than-life production, that's its downfall...

Pat Green is one of those artists that feels like a newcomer, but looks like he's been round the block a few times and has a story to tell. Spotted by Willie Nelson and asked to perform at one of his famous 4th July Picnics (captured on 1999's Live At Billy Bob's), Green released five albums independently before 2001's Three Days came out on major label Universal...

Pat Green is a Texas Country singer, which means he writes songs about Texas beer, Texas women and what an unfortunate son of a bitch you'd have to be to not have been born in Texas. But beneath his honey-BBQ back-porch drawl and pickup bed full of Shiner empties, he's downright indie rock. Green spent the better part of a decade recording and self-releasing his records DIY style, and five albums into a major-label career, sellout anxiety still haunts him...

Usually, by the time a musician hits album eight, he gets a bit bored or a little adventurous. Not Pat Green. The San Antonioborn singer-songwriter won his following with songs steeped in Lone Star iconography and down-home charm, and Lucky Ones isn't about to mess that up. It's got plenty of Jimmy-Buffet-Jr. good times falling head-over-heels at the local honky-tonk, soaking up sun in the Gulf a couple of standouts (the lovely, tender "My Little Heaven," and "College," destined to fuel ...

Lucky Ones is Pat Green's third album for a major label, but it's the first one where he truly seems comfortable gunning for the big time. He enlists producer Don Gehman, who produced a few songs on his previous album, 2003's Wave on Wave, for the entire record, and Gehman not only gives Lucky Ones a bright roots rock feel similar to the albums he produced for John Mellencamp, he also enlists drummer Kenny Aronoff and violinist Lisa Germano, both Mellencamp vets, for a few tracks...
