Pennywise Reviews

Wildcard/ A Word From The Wise consists of Pennywise's first 2 EP's originally released as 7 inches on Theologian Records in 1989 and later re-released together onto CD in 1992. Being their first recorded material I was hoping it would be similar to their Self Titled debut, fast, raw and with a youthful, idealistic, urgency that I felt wasn't as tangible after Unknown Road. What greeted my ears was a complete surprise...

Have Pennywise been a pioneer, flagship or talisman for the punk rock movement over the past couple decades? Has Jim Lindberg been the ideal frontman to boast a place among the greats who helped usher in punk to its rightful rung atop the music ladders of the world? Well, before we bicker for days on end on those issues, take a step back and breath in what Unknown Road accomplished in 1993. 20 years later, and this album still rings sweetly...

Only three days after the announcement that Jim Lindberg was back in Pennywise, the vocalist made his comeback at the Wros Fest in São Paulo, Brazil. Interestingly enough, Lindberg had left the band years ago after refusing to tour South America, which was the last straw in their already damaged relationship. But no grudges were held and Lindberg was very well received by the 4,000 people present at Espaço das Américas last Sunday night...

The most common complaint leveled against Pennywise is that all their songs sound the same, so when longtime vocalist Jim Lindberg left the band in 2009, only to be replaced by Ignite's Zoli Teglas, it seemed like a perfect time to shake things up, and perhaps reinvent themselves, as much as a band like Pennywise can anyway. To make a long story short, they didn't...

Sound: Ten. Twelve. This is album number ten for Pennywise and consists of twelve solid tracks, welcome to "All Or Nothing". The new album by Pennywise is the first album that has a new singer. Do not be fooled though, the band has kept their style and brought another solid album to the table. The sound of the album is fantastic. The title "All Or Nothing" is very fitting, because Pennywise decided to give it all. Their style has always been fast changing power chords with blasting drums...

They'll be celebrating their 25th anniversary next year, yet California's Pennywise have shown no sign of slowing down. All Or Nothing is their tenth studio full-length and the first with new vocalist Zoli Téglás, following original member Jim Lindberg's decision to call it a day in 2009. It's a scenario that pretty much kills most bands, but a few plays suggests they've managed to ride out that particular bump and deliver a solid set of anthemic, West coast punk most long-term fans will enjoy...

In a way, Pennywise's entire career can be summed up in one strange, ironic moment. During the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Anaheim Ducks made a run to hockey's Stanley Cup Final, eventually winning the cherished trophy. Now, most hockey teams have a song they use to celebrate each goal scored...

Sound: The sound of this album is fast and fresh, it's a good album but not their best, ever since Full Circle the band has had a political side to them. It has a good variety of songs, and for us aussie ther is a bonus track they cover land down under. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics on this album are not short of excellent. The lyrics go really nicley with the back up singer, as Pennywise goes on Jim (vocals) has improved in my opinion...

All Or Nothing is living proof that even after 24 years, a new frontman doesn't necessarily spell death to all that was pure and good. Unless of course you are Queen.Next month, after their longest hiatus yet between records, Californian punk rockers Pennywise will break their 14-year silence and release album number ten, All Or Nothing...
