Brad Nowell couldn't have known what he was starting. Filled with a desire for both social commentary and substance abuse, he wrote punk-infused, reggae-inspired ska songs with enough pop-radio appeal to make him a star (albeit belatedly). In his wake, we have a pale imitation in Pepper. On the Stitches EP, the band attempt to get introspective with three-quarters of the material. Then it's all thrown out the window for "Drunk Girl," a song that celebrates intercourse with the inebriated...

Sound: This record is tailored for college students everywhere. Big time sound, crunching guitar riffs, catchy chours lines, and above all varied styles of sound editing. The track "Like Your Style" shows the depth with which Pepper can produce their music. Abnormal song beat, strong voice editing, and little guitar work, all coming together in what might be one of the more popular tracks they've ever released. They speed the melodies up, only to slow you down later with smooth island jams...

Sound: Filled to the brim with island grooves and anthem rock jams. One half of this album can be described as loud and the other chill. Lots of quick catchy guitar riffs, palm mutes, and ska strumming. There are epic, building stories told from first person view and short quick catchy melodies that just make you feel good. Nice blend of acoustic and electric guitar work. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: A very youth directed album in terms of lyrics. Very laid back, party style songs...

Sound: The band really went back to their older syle of island inspired music with this album. You won't hear as much distorted guitar riffs and rock hard solos, but more slow paced raggae jams. The band stated that they poured their own feelings and angst into the music which you can clearly hear on the tracks: "Wet Dreams" "Love 101" and "Ambition". The album was produced by Butthole Surfer's guitarist Paul Leary...

Pepper is a group from Hawaii that has the bro-surf sound down. As I sit in my New York apartment just on the cusp of springtime warmth and listen to Pepper, I long for beaches and bonfires and getting drunk on the surf as the sun bakes everything above. As it's been a long winter, I'd even settle for one 70 degree day to come and make Pepper the soundtrack to a lazy, sunny afternoon...

The Hawaiian pop-metal trio Pepper deliver funky breaks as chill and inviting as the waves and weather of their homeland. They sprinkle elements of ska, reggae and Eighties pop on their sophomore album, In With the Old. At times, Pepper are akin to Living Colour ("Are You Down,"} and 311 ("7 Weeks") throughout the dozen-track set. Producer Ron Saint Germain zeroes in on Pepper's musical exploration without limiting the band to a certain radio-friendly sound...

In Bangladesh, the national car is pretty much the Morris Minor. They don't make them any more, but an enterprising Englishman has set up a machine shop where the Bangladeshis build parts for their old cars. By now, nearly all the cars are entirely composed of new parts. Posing the interesting question - are they still the same cars...

Does the world really need a reincarnation of Sublime? Is one 311 enough? Most would answer those questions "No" and "Yes", respectively. But with the general state things so downbeat and reflective, Pepper's laid-back reggae rhythms and general sense of recreation are a welcome change of pace. On their fourth album, and major label debut, the Hawaiian trio can't resist the temptation to add skits, but they do mix things up with some new wave-influenced pop, R&B, and metal touches...
