Peter Bjorn And John Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Peter Bjorn and John have been together since 1999, and they're still going strong. On fifth LP Gimme Some, the Swedish trio has stripped down their sound, and their brand of indie rock has never sounded fresher. These days, "minimalist" tends to refer to lo-fi garage rock. However, Peter Bjorn and John have truly reduced their sound down to its vital parts. Album highlight "Eyes" exemplifies this, carried by a strong bassline and crisp percussion...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare A Second Chance Peter Bjorn and John have become virtually synonymous with "Young Folks," their whistle-happy anthem from Writer's Block (2006). The band faced a difficult task in the aftermath of its release: how to progress from what was, in many respects, a thoroughly excellent album. Gimme Some, the Swedish indie group's sixth studio album, tackles rougher musical terrain...

Swedish indie pop favorites Peter Bjorn and John are hardly the first group to go by just their first names. There's Peter, Paul & Mary; Sonny & Cher; or even Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich (not actually their really names, but you get the picture). But after the success of their breakthrough 2006 single, "Young Folks," PB&J have become household names - at least in the households of fans of cool music...

LISTEN TO: May Seem Macabre SKIP IT: Listen to the whole album more than once With the weather getting warmer everyone needs an album that will take them out of the 'will it ever stop snowing' funk and catapult them straight into the glistening heatwave of Summer! Peter Bjorn & John's new album Gimme Some has done just that. From start to finish this CD has all you need for your summer time soundtrack...

I bet you wont find a review about PB&J that doesn't draw a large amount of comparison between pretty much everything they have done to date and their smash hit single 'Young Folks' (which you would have heard played to death in 2006/2007), which hails from their second fully-fledged album Writers Block. And damn it, I can't help but make a few comparisons too...

Peter, Bjorn & John have redeemed themselves bigtime with this new outing! Their last album Living Thing, really sounded flat to our ears and was such a letdown after the thrilling pop they delivered on their breakout album Writer's Block. Well with Gimme Some, these Swedes have returned to the top of their game and it looks like this is going to be a major contender for pop record of the summer and maybe even the year...

Did someone lock these Swedes in a room full of beer, old punk albums and motivational posters about pop music? It took a while for my brain to wrap itself around Peter Bjorn and John's latest to understand what they were aiming for. Heavy drums and catchy guitar riffs complimented by the sweet voice of Peter Morén reveal a new dimension to the group--and might prove these boys are something more than a pseudo-rocking band of indie darlings...

When Young Folks, the infectious single from Peter Bjorn & John's 2006 album, suddenly blew up, the Swedish trio responded to the pressure with a complete left turn into dark synth pop. The band's strength has always been their breezy, careless take on power pop, so the beleaguered genre-posturing didn't look good on them. On their newest, PB&J have abandoned the 80s act and stripped back down to what works: guitars, drums, bass and a boatful of hummable hooks...

The adorably wimpy Swedes' whistled 2006 focus track, "Young Folks," suggested sensitive boy-children who would have a hard time lifting guitars, let alone rocking out on them. But Peter Bjorn and John's sixth disc is pretty mannish, a foray into Seventies English punk rock, early U2 and R.E.M. anthemics, arena-drum bombast and a cowbell-happy jam their fan Kanye West could flow over. They aren't trying to throw a muscle shirt over their sniffy, heart-sick lyricism, they're pumping it up...
