Compass Although he's occasionally veered and experimented, Peter Rowan's comfort zone has always been pure traditional bluegrass, and--as if the album's title isn't enough of a giveaway--that's exactly what this latest release from the 70-year-old singer and guitarist is all about. Rather than stick to one group of support players though, Rowan opens the festivities to a rotating cast that includes both veterans of the genre (Jesse McReynolds, J.D...

The four men gracing the cover of High Lonesome Cowboy look more like farmers than musicians. The black-and-white photography, desert surroundings, and the old truck the old-timers are leaning against evoke the West circa 1940 or so. Walls of Time is a fine slice of traditional bluegrass and country, performed by several of the finest newgrass performers, including Sam Bush, Ricky Skaggs, and the Rowan siblings. Though the album focuses on vocal material, not instrumental, it remains an enjoyable, heartfelt evocation of classic bluegrass by some of the very best progressive bluegrass musicians of the '70s and '80s.

An all-around fine release. Rowan picks up where he left off on Dust Bowl but improves on the idea with some great backup musicians -- Stuart Duncan, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss, Roy Husky Jr, Alan O'Bryant, Edgar Meyer. The result is a highly recommended album, boasting 12 solid songs.

A very good album. It is all acoustic featuring Peter Rowan alone on guitar, mandola, and vocals. This grows on you.

Joining Rowan on this 1995 release are the Red Hot Pickers, a group comprised of Richard Greene, Roger Mason, Andy Statman, and Tony Trischka. The record marks a reunion for Rowan and Greene, both of whom were Blue Grass Boys with Bill Monroe before joining forces in Earth Opera, Sea Train and Muleskinner.
