Remember when you were a snotty teenager and used to carpool to various social activities virtually everywhere? Those were good times. I have the most magical of memories riding in the back of some janky Pontiac Grand Prix with the window tint plastic peeling off and some cassette adapter with the bare wires exposed (the really shitty ones would sometimes flip sides at random, so we had to jam folded cardboard in or stick our fingers into the unholy head-unit orifice) bumping our tunes...

Book Burner, the fifth full-length from Richmond, VA's grindcore mainstays Pig Destroyer, might lack the crystal-clear production of its predecessor, 2007's Phantom Limb, but that actually works in its favor. The raw sound displayed here immediately calls to mind the group's early work, particularly career high point Prowler in the Yard, and as such stands as their most focused, and altogether most intense work since then...

A frenzied testament to guitar-based violence, Pig Destroyer once again set about the task of decimating pretty much everything that stands before them on their fifth album, Book Burner. Combining thrash technicality with grindcore brutality, the band deliver their musical salvos with razor-sharp precision, allowing each gloriously destructive riff to come through crystal clear rather than getting lost in the pummeling drums stampede (delivered courtesy of Misery Index drummer Adam Jarvis)...

"Pig Destroyer has done well with 'Book Burner' to show that the band can throw some great licks in the mix that make for a more fun listening experience than typical grindcore." What often turns me off from grindcore albums after the first few songs is that there is no break from the roar of the music for even a second. The tracks are so muddled that they aren't enjoyable as music - it's just blasting noise...

The members of D.C.'s Pig Destroyer may take their time to put out records -- Book Burner is the first since 2007's Phantom Limb -- but their long-players are invariably lean and focused (or perhaps better to say: targeted). This one's got 19 tracks in just over a half hour, for example...

"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." ? Edgar Degas Book Burner is the fifth full-length from Virginia-based grindcore quartet Pig Destroyer. To say the metal fraternity is hugely anticipating the album's release might just be the understatement of the year. Pig Destroyer's songs, crammed with emotional and musical carnage, are executed with barbaric, pinpoint precision, and they have long been hailed as superlative examples of the ingenious artistry found in extreme metal...

"Phantom Limb is essential listening for fans of the genre as it fluidly summarizes the band's development." Few bands set off the fight-or-flight instinct like modern grind psychos Pig Destroyer. Like being subjected to an interrogator armed with pliers and a blowtorch, Pig Destroyer leave the listener wide-eyed and white-knuckled. The maniacally unhinged vocals, seizing rhythms and deranged lyrics have put the band in a psyche ward all their own...

Sound: Pig Destroyer goes on the same tour with Terrifyer as they did on 'Prowler In The Yard', their previous masterpiece. Brutal screams, extreme drums and violent guitars make the grindcore sound Pig Destroyer got their fame of. It took Scott Hull (guitarist, producer) two and a half years of work to finalise the cd and the dvd. I guess it was worth the wait, because it all sounds very agressive. Nothing less then their previous efforts...

Sound: The amount of wiggle room in grindcore is, well, practically nil. You don't wake up one day and decide, as a modern day grindcore auteur, that you're going to add a string section or a New Orleans brass band or the Polyphonic Spree as backup vocalists (even if what I've described there is basically Mr. Bungle)...
