Queen Reviews

5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

When Queen set up a memorial gig for their frontman in 1992, it was seven years after Live Aid, the event they had dominated along with U2. The tribute shared the same venue, Wembley Stadium; a host of guests from the rock and pop worlds again participated, the bigger names playing their own songs, along with Queen's, in tribute to the late frontman.
A year after Live Aid, Queen remained bolstered by its feelgood factor as they took their regal rock behind the Iron Curtain in 1986. No one knew then, of course, that this tour would be their last; fortunately, 15 of the state film department's cameras were following the group as Freddie, Roger, Brian and John strutted their stuff for an 80,000-strong crowd all intent on enjoying themselves. The footage is of outstanding quality and has been sympathetically edited with the music...
There are a few significant things about this show filmed in Budapest, Hungary in 1986. The Berlin Wall had not yet fallen and Hungary was still behind the so-called Iron Curtain and this was the first stadium show by a Western rock act to ever take place in the country. Then because Hungary was still an enclave of Communism the band was not allowed to profit from the show. The '86 Magic Tour that included this Budapest stop was also the last Queen tour to feature Freddie Mercury...
Earlier this year Eagle Vision released the excellent documentary Queen: Days of Our Lives and that film was appended with a handful of the band's music videos. Now the 2-DVD set Greatest Video Hits compiles all a Queen fan could ask for in the way of music videos. Disc 1 holds most of the band's big hits and favorite numbers, culled primarily from Queen's '70s and early '80s output and featuring super-oldies like "Killer Queen" and "Bohemian Rhapsody...
Sound: Queen really has a sound thats very distinct from any other band out there, Brian May especially has a very distinct and incredible tone, and you can really hear that on this album. It covers all there hits from their early years, from We Will Rock You right down to I Want To Break Free. It has some great rockin' tunes like Fat Bottomed Girls and Now I'm Here, and heartfelt love songs like Somebody to Love and Save Me...
Sound: Progressive, glam, pop/rock - it's all here! Queen really packs a punch with their complex musical arrangements, vocal-harmonizing, and overall length of songs. I like how most of the albums segues through songs, which helps keep everything moving. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics in this album are great and tend to be about fantasy. I call that fantasy-rock. 01. Procession - a great instrumental piece to start off the album 3/5. 02...
Sound: Containing two of rock's greatest songs, and other classics, News Of The World proved to be one of Queen's strongest of the '70s and had a more raw sound. Queen explore many new sounds including punk, metal, folk, blues, and even latin. Since Punk was a fairly new thing in the late '70s, Queen decided to tag along to the fad, producing a fierce song called "Sheer Heart Attack." // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are great and are more powerful then any other songs written by Queen...
Sound: All of Queen's trademark sounds are gathered in this ultimate compilation album. Originally released in 1981, Queen compilation albums have only changed over the years. This is probably the best Queen compilation you can possibly ask for. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: Over the years, Queen's sound and lyrics have changed but still remain amazing. The lyrics always match the atmosphere of the music and never fail to please the ears. Queen's music always seems to keep the listener satisfied...
Sound: After the huge sucess of 'Sheer Heart Attack' Queen went back to the studios knowing that there was going to be a lot of expectation for their next album. The recording sessions were made in different studios, sometimes with one member of the band playing on his own. Queen already gained a lot of popularity on the last year, but seems to be like that wasn't enough for them...
