Queensryche Reviews

For me personally, this was a concert I could not wait for. I got in my car, with my older sister, and we had headed 80 miles south of Milwaukee to a small town called McHenry, IL. I had only heard the name in passing, I was curious to see this small town, and the mighty Queensryche who was playing that night. First band to open the night of metal there, was an amazing Chicago based Metallica tribute band known as Blackened...

How does a band with over 30 years of history, start anew? Create a CD that is memorable? A CD that rewards long-time fans with a sense of nostalgia, while giving them a modern Queensryche? Or maybe it's just the fact that this CD isn't't the product of a tyrannical madman, who lost touch with his fans, and in my opinion, his mind. While nearly everyone knows the history of what happened between the members of this band, and Geoff Tate, this review is about this disc...

Review: Queensrÿche - Queensrÿche Revolver Magazine | Jun 28, 2013 | Comments 0 | Tags: Queensryche Rated: 4/5 Any longtime Queensrÿche fan would probably agree that the band's music lost much of its grandeur when key songwriter and co-guitarist Chris DeGarmo quit the band after Hear in the Now Frontier in 1997. Since then, vocalist Geoff Tate took more control than ever, and subsequent releases sounded more like Tate solo projects than bona fide Queensrÿche albums...

The debate is over. After Queensrÿche fired vocalist Geoff Tate in 2012, he left a trail of recriminations a mile wild. The end result is, as of this writing, an unresolved legal dispute between two bands using the Queensrÿche name. Tate struck first; after delivering a terrible solo album, he released the deeply disappointing Frequency Unknown (F.U. for short, get it?) under the band's name...

First, Queensrÿche endured guitarist Chris DeGarmo's 1997 departure. Then came last year's firing of singer Geoff Tate, whose assertion that he holds 81% of the act's songwriting credits sparked rampant commentary about exactly what each member has contributed to the band. Drummer Scott Rockenfield, guitarist Michael Wilton and bassist Eddie Jackson responded that they've played a major role in shaping Queensrÿche's sound, setting the stage for a "Will they or won't they bring it...

In order to avoid confusion based on information I have already written about very recently and for the sake of this review I need to make the obvious distinction that this is "Toddryche," rock fans. The much anticipated new album featuring vocalist Todd La Torre does in many ways give back what many older Queensryche fans have been wanting for years, a return to the core of what made this band so great to begin with: metal guitars and high harmonies...

"'...[B]anished is both the dull lifeless musical direction and wretched vocal performances. The band has brought back much of the direction that made it one of the most revered in progressive/power metal history.'" Have you grown sick of the Queensrÿche saga? Don't care whether Mr. Tate keeps the name, falls apart, throws cell phones, and conducts stupid contests to "call out reviewers...

How long have Queensryche fans been begging for a return to what made the band so special? How long have we been hoping for just the slightest bit of metal swagger or even some classic dual guitar harmonies? How long have we held on to every scrap of nostalgia in order to not hate the last 15+ years of Queensryche releases? We've made excuses, we've dropped our standards and, in the end, we simply learned to be happy with any release that wasn't totally embarrassing...

I want to address the ongoing debate/issue concerning the fact that there are two versions of the same band that exist currently in the world of Queensryche. This is not unchartered waters nor will it be something that goes away anytime soon. Unfortunately for the fans, Rock n' Roll is a business and in the old days when Joe Perry and Brad Whitford left Aerosmith (for example) there became The Joe Perry Project. No problem. New name, new identity, no harm done...
