Radical Face Reviews

Even as hardcore fans continue to lap up extra material, you rarely see analyses of releases outside of albums. These B-sides, EPs, bonus tracks (etc) are all too often treated as castaways and cash grabs, an attempt to gain something from the time an artist has spent on failures that couldn't make the final product. In defence of the consumer, there are many artists who do exactly that, but lumping Ben Cooper in with those is a grave mistake...

Tweet A Family Affair Concept albums are often scorned at, considered hokey gimmicks or forced attempts at creating high-handed, pretentious masterpieces. But The Family Tree: The Branches, the second installment in Radical Face's Family Tree trilogy, is a concept album done right. The trilogy began with The Roots (2011), which lays out the story of a fictional family called the Northcotes in the first half of the nineteenth century...

"I've got no need for open roads / 'Cause all I own fits on my back / I see the world from rusted trains / And always know I won't be back." These lines, from the track Ghost Towns, perhaps perfectly encapsulate this second LP from Florida native Ben Cooper, aka . Floridian Ben Cooper is the one-man-band recording as Radical Face. He's also half of the Morr duo Electric President, a project focused on muted indie pop in the Postal Service vein that has come to define the label. But where Electric President continually reminds you of digital nature of the production, with its glitchy beats and cut-up instruments, Radical Face is where Cooper indulges his more trad songwriting ambitions...

Ben Cooper is a young musician who is also one half of the group Electric President (who put out their self titled album last year on Morr Records. Radical Face is the new solo project from Cooper, and it some things in common with his other group while moving in a slightly more band-like direction, with more guitars and live instrumentation including drums and a slew of other elements...

Ghost, the solo debut of Radical Face (a.k.a. twenty-four-year-old Ben Cooper, who also plays in the duo Electric President), shows a young songwriter with considerable talent. It's an intimate affair -- the album was recorded in his shed in Jacksonville -- but a wide-ranging one. This is lovely acoustic and vocals pop, with a Shins-y melodicism and a nasal harmonies from deep within the brain. This full-length isn't radical, but it's certainly promising...
