Initially a songwriter in Nashville, Foster made his recording debut in 1986 as one half of the Foster & Lloyd duo, recording three studio albums and with nine singles on the US country charts. Radney Foster has said that his latest album, Revival, is meant to be spiritually introspective; having just lost his father and having had his son move back from France. Indeed, many of the songs fit that introspective mindset quite nicely, marrying Foster's country and rock influences to perhaps his strongest vocal performances and strongest lyrics. The defunct duo of Foster and Lloyd seemed merely to be grafting pop elements to country lyrics, or country instrumentation to pop attitude. On his first solo album, Del Rio, TX 1959, Radney Foster comes closer to narrowing the great divide, but ends up veering back and forth from rhyme by rote to poetic truth.
